Playing 5 of the top 10 teams in the State gives Oak Park the 'opportunity' to gain a lot of attention in the lacrosse community. But are they ready? New to CIF, they have a long way to go to prove themselves a contender. Under the right circumstances and with proper support, the Eagles could build a Nationally recognized program. But that's easier said then done! In recent weeks I've not seen many kids out working out at Media or OPHS with lacrosse sticks. Hopefully they're out working out somewhere. I know a few of the core players are working with the Starz 101 Elite team. That's a big start. But those who've not been with a stick since this summer, or worse, the end of last season, are way behind. They need to be working with teammates, regaining their skills, conditioning, and preparing for the upcoming scrimages the team will need to do to be on the same page for the start of the 09 season! Under CIF rules the coaches can't officially assemble the teams before the official start date of the season. That's why it's important to be self-motivated and understand what will be required to be ready for the start of this season. Half the teams OP is playing are already playing together in club and are ready NOW for the beginning of the season in February. Parents, old and new, must be willing to be involved. Without support of parents, players and alumnus (like the Bennetts, Albers, Phillips, Costellos, Carpenters, Marshalls, etc.), the future of the OP Lax program is in question. As much as the State Club Championship, subsequent financial donations, and the continuing support of parents who's kids have gone through the program combined to create the program we have today, others must step up and help to raise awareness of the program and help promote the program's value as a vehicle to college as well as an alternative to Football, Baseball, & Track. The success of the Boosters is extremely important as an external source of support both emotionally and financially to the team. Without them there will be no source of funds, or continued interest in the future of the team. I implore all parents currently interested in this program to actively participate in Boosters by contacting your Board and encouraging them to set a meeting soon! With only 10 weeks remaining before the first game, it would be wise to begin setting an agenda for the Boosters! Unfortunately, Ralph Phillips is stepping down from the helm of the OPLAX Boosters. This leaves a huge vacancy and no one in charge. The responsibility of the Boosters is left to Steve Albers and the other Board Members. Any passionate LAXMom or a LAXDad interested in the success of your son's program is encouraged to step forward and help give Steve and the others a hand. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Happy Holidays. GO EAGLES!! Chuck Whelan
