A late offensive start by the Joel Barlow High hockey team could not make up the deficit in time when it took on Newtown on Monday.
Midway through the game the Falcons found themselves looking at a four-goal hole. While they did eventually respond, time ran out before they could get the equalizer in a 4-3 loss at the Danbury Ice Arena.
Although the Falcons and fans did no get the win they were looking for, the team showed some strong character as they battled back.
The first half of the game was controlled by the Nighthawks. Taking advantage of Barlow€™s penalties and lack of urgency, they jumped to a quick 2-0 lead.
At the midway point, the Falcons began to take control. Sam Weber broke the ice with his first goal of his high school career on the 5-3 power play. Pat Mimms and Mike Mattson assisted the play.
Soon after that Paul Camomilli and Chris Van Camp set up Jack Cartafalsa, who slid the puck through the five hole of Newtown€™s goalie.
The third period was full of opportunities for each team. Gordon Loery kept Barlow within two through the rest of the game with some difficult saves in the final two minutes.
With 1:48 remaining, Mattson brought the Falcons within one with a goal set over the goaltender€™s shoulder. Weber made what coach called the €œbest assist of the season€ on the goal and earned his second high school point, each at critical times in the game.
Despite battling back to bring the game within one goal, the Falcons could not cash in and time expired with Newtown leading 4-3.
Barlow will face Shepaug on Saturday at 4:20 in Danbury. As part of Senior Night, team members Sean Foley, Adam Jacobs, Ryan McGowen, Weber, Camomill, Loery, and Rob Smuniewski will be recognized for their commitment to the team.
Barlow students who show their student ID will be admitted free. The first 25 will receive a coupon for a sandwich at Subway on Ethan Allen Highway.
