MORRISTOWN — The Morristown boys swim team had a unified goal at the U&ME Invitational on Friday afternoon. Defend this pool. The Colonials were particularly determined to withstand much of the old Iron Hills Conference and claim the title at home. Though Randolph mounted a particularly tough challenge, Morristown emerged with 269 points and the boys team title. Anchored by junior Matt Linz’s pair of individual victories and a first-place medley relay, the Rams had 210 points – as both teams far outpaced the rest of the field. Morristown had topped Randolph by just two points in a dual meet on Thursday afternoon, spurring the rivalry even more.“We wanted to beat Morristown really badly (on Thursday),” Linz said. “We gave it our all, but we came up just a little bit short. We’re just exhausted … but (Thursday’s) loss is a lot of the fuel for winning (at the Invitational).”
Mendham easily defended its girls title with 275 points, winning seven of the 11 events. Seniors Celia Frick (200 free, breaststroke) and Isabelle Cecere (IM, butterfly) each won a pair of individual events, and were part of the Minutemen’s winning medley and 400 free relays – along with classmate Maya Scheidl, who was also first in the 400 free.“We’re switching it up,” Frick said. “We wanted to have some variety.” Morris Knolls senior Jessica Stiles claimed both freestyle sprints, and had a 26.88-second anchor to bring the 200 free relay up to first place. Amy Nemeth of Mount Olive was first in the backstroke, and had the fastest backstroke split – 31.93 seconds – to give the medley relay an early lead. Roxbury sophomore James Singewald won both the IM and backstroke.“The 100 isn’t my best event, but it shows I’m able to do something better than what I expected,” Stiles said. “It’s mostly just for fun, but there’s good competition here. I love it.”
Morristown coach Donna Gelegonya organized the U&ME Invitational as a replacement of sorts for the NJAC Championships, which were only held once. It brought together 11 Morris County schools, plus West Essex — the lone Essex County representative. Defending boys champ Summit, the lone Union County team a year ago, did not enter on Friday. That cleared the way for host Morristown, who had finished second at the invitational last winter.Though their only first-place finishes were the 200 and 400 free relays, the Colonials had at least two swimmers in the top six in six of the eight individual events. “We always want to be the best,” Morristown freshman Matthew Critchley said. “It gives us more incentive to keep going on, because we know how good we can be. We just have to finish hard.”
