The QC Firebirds USA (03) finished the week at USSSA Midwest Nationals as the runner-up, tallying a record of 8-2-1 on the week. The only team the Firebirds lost to during the week was the champions, the Missouri Bombers 14U.
The Firebirds started the with 2 wins and a tie in pool play, entering bracket play as one of the top 8 teams. Three wins in a row over tough competition pitted the Firebirds against last-year's runner-up, the Missouri Bombers 14U. The Bombers came out swinging, putting up 4 runs in the first 5 innings. A 5-run effort in the top of the 7th inning put the Bombers up 9-0. The Firebirds mounted a rally in the bottom of the 7th, plating 4 runs, but came up short.
The loser's bracket play began the next morning with wins over three tough teams, putting the Firebirds in the championship game against the Bombers. The Firebirds scored first in the top of the 1st inning, plating one run. The Bombers answered in the bottom of the 2nd, tying the game at 1-1. The Bombers scored again in the bottom of the 5th. which would turn out to be the winning run.
The Firebirds bats were solid against great pitching throughout the week. The Firebirds racked up 41 runs on 80 hits with only 13 extra-base shots. The Birds batted .269 as a team. The Firebirds pitching was as strong as ever, tallying 89 K's, allowing 51 hits and 26 runs through the 10 games. The Firebirds pitchers combined for a .818 ERA.
