Callahan leads Joel Barlow boys hockey past New Fairfield-Immaculate

DANBURY -- Patrick Callahan can't score enough goals. No amount of points will bring back his junior season, lost entirely to a back injury.

The Joel Barlow senior right winger is making up for lost time, and the Falcons have yet to lose anything in 2010-11.

Callahan continued his scorching start Wednesday night at the Danbury Ice Arena as the Falcons used a three-goal second period to cruise past a senior-less and struggling New Fairfield-Immaculate squad, 3-0.

The Falcons are unbeaten at 4-0. The Rebels dropped to 0-5.

With two goals and an assist, Callahan collected his team-leading eighth goal and 13th point. Sophomore goalie Thierry Jean, a transfer, turned away all 15 New Fairfield-Immaculate offerings to pick up his first shutout.

"We've actually played well in the second period all season," said Falcons coach Pete Maxfield, who, despite a 13-4 shooting advantage, was staring at a 0-0 score at the first intermission.

"The guys were very strong in the first putting the puck on net and crashing the net, but (New Fairfield-Immaculate goalie Ryan) Dobos is a great goalie. He's been turning away a lot of pucks all year so we knew we'd have to have a lot of shots to break through."

When New Fairfield-Immaculate's Matt Hilliard was whistled for hooking with 20.3 seconds remaining in the first, the Falcons -- stymied by Dobos in the first -- finally had their chance to operate in space. Callahan capitalized, jamming home a backhand from in close 38 seconds into the second. The Falcons offense was jump-started.

"The first period was pretty frustrating but we didn't really take it to heart too much," Callahan said. "In the locker room, me and my linemates talked and we were just kind of like, Well, let's go out this period and crack it, and that's what we did."

Callahan struck again less than two minutes later, beating Dobos low from the left circle with a slap shot. Mike Mattson, another senior who's off to a quick start, notched his fourth goal of the season on a power play with under 30 seconds remaining in the period to round out the scoring.

For the Rebels, penalty killing took its toll. Dobos' efforts weren't enough to make up for the shot disparity, which finished at 29-15 in favor of the Falcons. And the Rebels' best two chances -- a pair of short-handed breakaways for Anthony Smyth -- went for Jean saves.

"They ended up with a couple power play goals in that second period and it's tough when you're already short-handed, the penalties just kill you," said Rebels coach Greg Romans, pointing to some injuries in key spots on his roster. "You have to expend a lot of energy killing them off and it makes it tough. We have a really good group. You can see they never give up. And Ryan Dobos is an amazing goaltender."
