After going 3 overtimes in their Cougar Cup championship game the night before, Glenbard's Varsity team had to get back on the ice to continue their pursuit of the Blackhawk Cup State Championship. They would face-off against Latin Schools of Chicago, who beat up Jacobs 7-0 in their first round game.
Glenbard would get out to an early lead against Latin as Senior Lino DePinto would score just over a minute and a half into the game, with assists from Rocco Stachowiak and Brandon Kressner. Glenbard would dominate the opening period outshooting Latin 13-5, but would only have that 1-goal lead after the first 15 minute frame.
Latin would start the 2nd period with more energy then they brought in the 1st, but Glenbard would be the team to find the back of the net and Kressner put them up 2-0 at the 10:16 mark of the 2nd. Senior Mitchell Bilyk and Stachowiak would pick up the assists on the Kressner goal. Senior goalie Chris Matza would have to make some key saves to keep Latin off the board and Glenbard would head into the 2nd period intermission with the 2-goal lead and outshooting Latin 27-15.
The 3rd period would get under way with Latin getting the majority of the scoring chances, but Matza was there to answer the call each time. Halfway through the 3rd period, Glenbard would increase their lead to 3-0 on a goal from Stachowiak, assisted by DePinto. Matza continued to steer away any comeback attempt by Latin by making 10 saves in the final frame. Glenbard iced the victory with Kressner picking up his 2nd of the game scoring on the Latin empty net, with assists from Sophomore Kevin Gould and DePinto. Matza finished the game making 25 saves for his 4th shutout of the season, while Kressner, Stachowiak, and DePinto led the offense with 3 points each.
Glenbard will next take on LincolnWay East in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 13th at the Edge in Bensenville. Glenbard has faced LincolnWay East in each of the last 2 years of the Blackhawk Cup. LWE knocked out Glenbard in the quarterfinals in 2010 with a 4-1 victory, but Glenbard was able to return the favor to LWE last year, winning 4-3 in 2OT.
