B-POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Sat June 25th

PAKISTAN CAPTURES B-POOL CHAMPIONSHIP
IN OVERTIME

Defeat France 6-5 in thriller with hero Ijaz Chaudhry scoring the gamewinner and Usama Mahmood getting the hattrick.

It was redemption time for Pakistan. To redeem themselves for 2009 and for the first game against France. The team did not disappoint. In a topsy turvy game often dictated by the referees, Ijaz Chaudhry put his patented slap shot in the top glove side at 40 seconds of overtime on a power play to win it for his team. A roar went through the arena as hundreds of locals supported Pakistan in this match. The 41 year old General laid it all on the line and rallied his troops, leading by example while playing on a sore ankle. He deservedly received the award for MVP of the Pool B division to. He was supported by Raza Zaidi, who made more than a few spectacular saves and was given the best goaltender of the tournament award. Leading scorer Bilal Buttar made the tournament all star team as best centre.

Bilal opened the scoring but France tied it on a power play in the first. In the second Usama Mahmood scored on a shorthanded breakway and than scored soon after on a power play after a clutch cross crease set up by Mudassar Hussain.

France brought it close with a powerplay goal of their own.

Usama then scores on a beautiful individual effort to make it 4-2 and France once again closed the gap on a shorthanded effort.

Pakistan responded on the next power play with Osman Buttar scoring from the point. Than the drama began! With Pakistan shorthanded, France pulled their goalie and scored twice in the last 2 minutes to pull even. Pakistan were reeling but were aided by a high sticking penalty to France on which Bilal Buttar was high sticked and received 3 stitches to the face.

In the intermission between the 3rd period and overtime GM Naveed Mohammad was able to calm and rally the troops to focus on the first 3 minutes of OT with the teams productive power play. Ijaz Chaudhry, took it from their and fittingly did what he has done for years....he led from the front...and it was game over France.

Game MVP: Usama Mahmood

SEMI FINAL: Fri June 24 @ In Progress

PAKISTAN defeats BERMUDA: 3-2

Osman Buttar (front) celebrates one of his 2 goals - the gamewinner - against Bermuda.

In a game that saw Pakistan get stronger as the game went on, Pakistan pulled out a come from behind win 3-2.

With Pakistan outplaying Bermuda through the first 2 periods, Bermuda somehow held onto a 1-0 lead. In the second intermission coach Ali Wadee and GM Naveed Mohammad urged the players not to change the game plan. Patience and determination finally paid off with 3 quick goals to vault Pakistan to a 3-1 lead. 2 questionable calls from the referees in the last 3 mins brought the game close. In the last 30 seconds some heartstopping moments resulted in a 3-2 final. Ijaz Chaudhry (pictured) scored followed by 2 goals by Osman Buttar made the difference. Baba Khan gave the Bermudans fits all game. Pakistan plays the winner of Great Britain and France on Saturday at 4pm (10 am EST).

PRELIMINARY GAME 3: Thurs June 23rd

FRANCE defeats PAKISTAN: 8-5

Sajjid Ayubi and goalie Raza Zaidi brace for a point shot in the game against France.

Pakistan fell asleep at the wheel in the first period trailing by 4 goals put up by the French team made up mostly of Slovakian expats.  The big guns showed up and scored often with Osman Buttar getting 2 goals and 2 assists but the defense did not support the offense.  Pakistan did turn up the offense to make it close but a porous defense and a tired looking Raza Zaidi were not able to support the come back bid.

This is a concern as Pakistan arrived here with no backup due to the last minute withdrawal of Ibad Khan. The team firmly believes Zaidi will bounce back with a solid effort.

Pakistan plays for keeps tomorrow in the semi final match up against Bermuda.  In previous meetings Pakistan has one loss (2007) and one tie (2009) against the island nation.  The team does get a bit of a rest with 30 hours between games.

PRELIMINARY GAME 2: Wed June 22nd

PAKISTAN defeats HONG KONG: 2-1

In a game that turned out to be more difficult than expected, Pakistan held on in the end for a key 2-1 win.  The win basically assures a semi-final spot with only the seedings in the division to be determined by the Pakistan vs France game to be played tomorrow.

In a game where Pakistan dominated play, but were unable to finish off their chances, Malton's Mudassar "Muddy" Hussain was once again opportunistic with 1 goal and an assist.  Reliable checker Camran Baig tallied the winner with Junaid Mohammad and Captain Ijaz Chaudhry contributing points for the second consecutive game.

Pakistan ran into penalty trouble in the third.  After killing off a Sajjid Ayubi interference penalty at the beginning of the third, Pak was forced back into a defensive posture by a high sticking penalty again by Sajjid.  Hong kong scored here to bring the match to a tense climax and breaking Raza Zaidi's shutout streak at 5 periods.  The Ayubi brothers of Sajjid and Tariq took a total of 4 penalties in an effort to break a record held most likely by the Mohammad brothers (or maybe just the elder Naveed).

In the end the captain stated "our big guns were silent once again, but a win is a win and this is a big one, we will hopefully carry forward the lessons learned to the next game against France.

President: Ijaz Chaudhry:

2011 TRYOUT CAMP A SUCCESS
March 1st, 2011

"The Pakistan Ball Hockey Federations wishes to thank all of the participants who attended the Invitational camp this past weekend.  We have prepared a short list of potential players that will be considered for the final spots.  If you don't see your name on the list and wish to discuss this further with us, please contact us and we will be more than happy to listen.  For all of the players who are fortunate enough to be on the short list ...Congratulations! You are now that much closer in representing Pakistan in Slovakia.

We now require your commitment in financial terms.  To secure your spot, It is imperative that you email transfer $300 to ijazchaudhry@rogers.com within the next 14 days.  Failure to do so will only question your commitment to the program and we will be glad to fill it with players who desire it more.  When you email transfer the money, please send an email to the same address confirming that you have done so.  For those players who do not end up making the final team, they will be refunded most of the deposit (less practice costs).

We are look forward to the next set of practices that are tentatively scheduled for March 19 and 20.  The location will be announced as soon as we have a firm booking.  Keep your eyes on the Website for any news and developments.  Attendance is mandatory for all local players.  For the players who are from out of town, we would love to have your attendance but will understand if you're not present.  We implore all prospective players to begin training NOW if they have not begun already!

I would also ask all players on the short list to seriously begin seeking out sponsorship dollars.  We have a package on the website that can be downloaded and can be used for this purpose.  For every dollar raised, 40% goes to the player and 60% to the team.  We will issue the rebate before we depart for Slovakia.  We need some players who wish to lead the charge in organizing fund-raising events.  Please let us know if you are interested in helping with this.

Please send any comments or questions via email.  Thank you.
