After struggling to find the net in its first two games of the season the Joel Barlow High hockey team notched its first victory of the young season.

The Falcons, who scored one goal in their first two games, got their offense going on Monday when they visited Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard-Old Lyme. A strong effort in the second period put them in control for a 4-1 win at Connecticut College’s Dayton Arena.

Charlie Berry gave the Falcons the lead, scoring on an unassisted power play as the visitors finished the first period up 1-0. In the second frame Billy Berry scored his first high school goal, also on a power play, with his older brother picking up the assist.

The former did not have to wait long to strike again, scoring his second goal and giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead as Tyler Valus and Will Sinsigalli both picked up assists. The lead stretched to 4-0 when Kyle Converse netted his first high school goal when he buried a shot from the slot as Sinsigalli picked up his second assist.

Fitch broke the shutout when it scored a second- period goal of its own making it 4-1 but Barlow goalie Thierry Jean picked up the victory, turning away 17 of 18 shots.

The score was reversed in the season-opener when the Falcons hosted Housatonic Valley last Wednesday, Dec. 18. Despite taking the lead in the first period the hosts would not score again in a 4-1 loss at the Danbury Arena.

Charlie Berry gave the Falcons a first period lead with assists from Billy Berry and Converse, but the Mountaineers kept the Falcons off the board, scoring one to tie it later in the frame. They scored in the second to take the lead and added a couple of insurance goals in the third to put the game away.

Jean had a strong showing in net, making 24 saves.

Scoring chances were few when the Falcons visited Masuk on Saturday. Limited to just five shots, they came p empty in an 8-0 loss at the Rinks atShelton.

The Panthers scored a pair of goals in each of the first two periods but sealed the win in the third with another four.

Jean and Connor Jones were in goal for Barlow, making 17 and four saves respectively.
