Portsmouth came out on the losing end of a game on Monday with the co-op team from Providence Country Day, St. Raphael Academy, and Wheeler on Monday. The game which had previously been postponed because of the snowstorm earlier in the month, was played in the afternoon on the Martin Luther King Birthday holiday at the Benny Mageira Ice Rink at the West Warwick Civic Center.
PSW got off to a quick start and scored the first goal of the contest only a minute and a half into the first period. The Patriots responded late in the period with goals by Kyle McGowan and Alec Roderiques and carried the 2-1 lead into the first intermission. But it was not going to be enough.
PSW tied the score just 14 seconds into the second period. After that the teams played evenly the rest of the period with both squads generating good scoring opportunities, but unable to cash in and take the lead.
In the middle of the third period, PSW broke the game open with two goals and held the lead to the final buzzer.
Conor Struckman in the net for the Patriots had 23 saves on 28 shots in the teams losing effort. The team had four power play opportunities but did not score, and it was perfect in not allowing a goal in two penalty kill situations.
Myles Arkins and Ryan Goulart were credited with the assists on Portsmouth’s goals.
The loss was the fourth in a row in league play for the Patriots whose record now stands at 2 wins and 5 losses.
The Patriots next game is with the Middletown Islanders on Saturday, January 25, at 7:00 PM at St George’s Cabot – Harman Ice Center. Portsmouth, who has not beaten Middletown in the previous three seasons, will be looking to end the drought and even this year’s series with the Islanders following last week’s loss.
The game with Middletown will be followed the next day by the rescheduled game with Cumberland. Not only was the date changed for the Patriots to host the Clippers, but the contest was moved to the Abbey and will start at 5:30 PM.
Both these games are nearby and a great opportunity to see the Patriots in action. Head to the games and root for the team. See you at the rink.
