Lady Engineers Win Gold Bracket of Hyde Holiday Tournament

The Lady Engineers matched up against J.E.B. Stuart of Falls Church Virginia on the first night of the Tournament. They wasted no time, jumping out to a 19-5 lead after the first quarter of play and would cruise the rest of the way. The final was 56-24 and the Lady Engineers advanced to the championship game of the gold bracket. The Lady Engineers played all active members in this one, led by Freshman Janya Lilly and her early established career high 12pts 8rbs. Hot handed Kaya Stokes knocked down the only two three point field goals for the Lady Engineers and she finished with her career high 8pts.  Tylea Galloway and Jewel Porter both finished with 8pts, respectively.  Deierra Weems finished with 5pts 5rbs 5stl and Jai-Ivy Lee finished with her career high 7rbs.

The championship game would be against IAAM B conference Severn.  The Lady Engineers would jump out quick to an 11-4 lead with 2:30 left in the first quarter.  A couple of turnovers from the Lady Engineers, would allow Severn to get back into the game and finished the quarter down 13-10.  The Lady Engineers bounced back starting the second quarter and went on an 8-0 run within 1:30 time frame. Foul trouble and breakdowns on the defensive end would doom the Lady Engineers the remainder of the quarter.  They were outscored 12-2 and went into the half down 24-23.  The third quarter was back and forth throughout, but Severn managed to increase their lead to 34-31 by the end of it.  Severn built a 40-36 lead with 4:30 left to play, but on the next Lady Engineers possession , Jewel Porter found an open Khepera Stokes and she knocked down a three pointer, cutting the lead to one.  Tylea Galloway came through clutch hitting another one of her deep three pointers that she has been known for this season, putting the Lady Engineers up 42-41 with 4:11 to play.  Both teams would go on a drought without a field goal and Severn hit the front end of a one and one to tie the game at 42 a piece with 2:19 left in the game.  Severn missed the back end and Jewel Porter pulled down the rebound.  Both teams had opportunities, but could not capitalize.  With 25 seconds left in the game, Khepera Stokes got fouled driving to the basket and went to the line to shoot two.  Khepera hit the second of two free throws, putting the Lady Engineers up 43-42.  Severn came down and missed a shot that went out of bounds to give possession to the Lady Engineers.  With :15 seconds left, Severn pressured the Lady Engineers and forced a turnover with :7 seconds remaining.  Severn had an open look, but the ball bounced off the hands of a Severn player and went out of bounds.  Khepera Stokes made two free throws putting the Lady Engineers up 45-42 with 1.7 seconds left to play.

Khepera Stokes and Tylea Galloway combined for 20pts 12ast and Jewel Potter and Deierra Weems combined for 15pts 19rbs. Jazmine Talley and Janya Lily  combined for 6pts 13rbs.

The Lady Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, January 5th against Patterson.  Jewel Porter and Khepera Stokes posted career highs with 12rbs and 11ast.
