The Patriots’ victory in the second game of their playoff final series with North Smithfield Saturday evening not only kept the team’s bid for a state championship title alive, it also brought Head Coach Mike Monahan to a unique milestone: 100 wins.
In the thirty years that Portsmouth High School has had a hockey team, seven men, including Monahan, have served as head coach. During that span, none of the previous coaches ever attained 100 victories.
This season, Monahan’s seventh at the helm of the Patriots, marked his tenure as the team’s longest serving head coach. During that time he has guided his teams to the Division II state championship final series three times. He already has one state championship, and one championship runner-up to his credit; his current team is looking to add another state crown to his record tomorrow, in this year’s series finale.
Immediately after the Patriots evened their best of three series with a 4-3 win over the Northmen, the parents of the players held a banner to the glass behind the players’ bench congratulating Coach Monahan on his accomplishment. Later, when the team was in the dressing room celebrating their win, the players presented the banner to their coach and offered congratulations all around.
Coach Monahan’s achievement includes all of his victories in league, non-league, and playoff games since becoming the head coach.
Congratulations Coach Monahan on an impressive accomplishment.
