After a season truncated by Covid 19, the Bremerton Knights are ready for a full basketball season with designs on competing for an Olympic League title.
The Knights finished 10-3 overall, 7-2 in Olympic League play during the spring when the pandemic led to a truncated season and no state playoffs.
“It slowed the season down,” head coach Miah Davis said of last year. “It’s still in the back of our minds a little bit, and can still affect the season.”
The Knights had to pause all basketball activities for two weeks after a positive Covid test early in the spring season. Once their season resumed, the Knights went on a five game winning streak before they were stopped by eventual league North Kitsap.
Now, the Knights get to play a full season in the winter time with designs on a league title and to advance deep into the post season.
“This season, we want to get more physical,” Davis said, “impose our will instead of waiting for them. We want to take it to them.
“This is what we’re focusing on – sacrifice, showing empathy, and take care of the team before you take care of yourself. They’ve superceded my expectations in these two weeks of practice.”
Leading the team is a trio of seniors that stood out during the spring season – D’Angelo Moore, Kanye Taylor, and Ruppe Wilson. Moore led the Knights with 17 points per game, including a school record 48 points against Chimacum. Taylor averaged nine rebounds a game, including a season high 18 against South Kitsap, and Wilson averaged five assists last season.
“We have a pretty solid senior class,” said Davis. “We’re looking at three years of experience with them, and are looking forward to them leading the team. This will be a good transitional year from this year to next, as the team strives to be on top of the Olympic League.” |
