The defending state champion Bremerton Knights opened the 2025-26 season in dominating fashion, as coach Miah Davis watched his son Jalen break another scoring record.
The six-foot junior guard exploded for 51 points to break his single game scoring record as the Knights routed the South Kitsap Wolves 94-42 in the Eathorne Gym to start the season.
The previous record was 47 points which he did against Shelton in a 66-42 win as a freshman on December 11, 2023.
Jalen didn’t know how close he was to the record until the coaching staff told him late in the third quarter.
“I thought it was it was in the 30’s,” he said, “but once I got back to my dad, the coaches told me where I was.”
Jalen was 19 of 23 from the floor with four 3-pointers, and 8 of 11 from the foul line, and also had four steals.
Now Jalen has a chance to break Marvin Williams’ career school scoring record before the calendar changes to 2026.
As for the bigger picture, the Knights are out to defend the 2A state title they won back in March.
“It’s all about preparation,” coach Miah Davis said after the game. “I think a lot of it is togetherness we have to have throughout the season, and the sacrifice we have to make. The hard work the people don’t see, I think that’s a prime example of always wanting to be bigger better player than last year.”
As the defending 2A state champion, the Knights will have a target on their backs, as teams will give their best shot to knock them off. Bremerton has been ranked second in the state polls to start the year, behind the team that won the previous two state titles, Lynden,
“For me, that’s more fuel to the fire,” said coach Davis. Sometimes when you earn it, they still don’t give you respect. One thing about living in Bremerton, every day you have to reinvent yourself and prove yourself to make people believers. I told them, I’m the captain of the ship, I’m going to give you the blueprint on how to get to our destination. If we can follow that blueprint, we’re going to be all right.”
Bremerton’s man to man defense made life miserable for the Wolves, forcing 22 turnovers and continually disrupting their passes throughout the game, despite some early foul trouble. They outscored the Wolves 18-5 in the second quarter, holding them scoreless until about two minutes remaining before halftime.
“There was a little more reaching than I would expect, but we were moving our feet, and being in the right spots in our rotation,” said coach Davis.
“We just have more to prove," coach Davis continued, "it’s just the tip of the iceberg. First game of the year, we don’t know what to expect. Their energy is at all-time high, the first time putting the jersey back on after winning state. It’s hard to hit the reset button. I think we lived up to the standard but we still have a lot more to prove.”
