A visiting group of Californians were among those at Eathorne Gym to witness basketball history for the Bremerton Knights.
Jalen Davis became the Knights’ all-time leading scorer as he scored 36 points to lead the Knights to a 65-50 non-league win over the Oakland Wildcats from California on Saturday afternoon.
Davis only needed six points to pass Marvin Williams on the Knights’ all-time scoring list. Williams had 1527 points in three seasons, while Davis had 1522 just two games into the 2025-26 season.
Davis passed Williams in the second quarter on a short runner in the paint early in the second quarter to get the record.
“This game shows us where we’re at,” said Jalen Davis. “It was a good game to have against an out of state team to see where we’re at. As for the record, I wanted to do it with my teammates, especially in practice.”
The Wildcats, from the Oakland Athletic League, stayed close with the Knights (2-0) for most of the first half, as the Knights led 25-23 at halftime. But the Knights turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, and kept the Wildcats from running up and down the court.
“Our last game was up and down,” said coach Miah Davis, “but we expected that on both ends. It was like practice and at home. It coincided with who we are, run and gun Knights, and we get a team that was an image of us.”
“For us, we watched film on them,” he added. “They like to go up and down the floor after a miss, so we did drills to try to deal with the, getting the ball and slow them down.”
The game with Oakland came about when the Wildcats came up to play Renton and Rainier Beach. But Rainier Beach backed out of their game, and the visitors needed a team to play. So Renton’s coach, Rashaad Powell, who is good friends with Miah Davis, called him up and the game was set. Coach Davis needed a game so the Knights would not have a long lay off between games after they routed South Kitsap on December 2.
The Knights began to pull away from the Wildcats in the third quarter, as their defense swarmed all over the them. Jalen Davis scored 14 points in the quarter, including an incredible heave from 90 feet away as time expired in the period that hit the backboard and swished in, electrifying the crowd inside Eathorne Gym.
While Jalen was lighting up on offense, Jay Beahan was literally blocking Oakland from the basket. The 6-foot-8 sophomore recorded 10 blocks on defense, equally Marshaun Thompson 1999 state tournament record, by getting in the face of the Wildcats when they attempted layups and close in shots. He also pulled down eight rebounds.
“I was just really trying to block everything that came inside and help my team get the win,” Beahan said.
“That his commitment to the game,” said coach Davis. “For him to play that game for most of the first half. without no sub, that was his testament of his will.”
Bremerton will next be in action against Kingston and North Mason next week to open Olympic League play.
