MEDFORD -- Records do not tell the whole story, as Austin Prep found out last night.
The previously-winless Medford Mustangs brought their Greater Boston League ground control game to Hormel Stadium and the end result was their first win of the year, a 22-8 gem over Austin Prep.
The loss left the Cougars at 3-3, while Medford stands at 1-5.
After a scoreless first quarter Medford ran off two long ball-control drives that led to scores and a 14-0 halftime lead. Phil Chery found the end zone on a 4-yard scamper around right end, but his conversion rush was stopped.
Fullback Steve Murphy pushed over from the one and this time Chery was able to add the conversion rush.
AP was held to 31 yards in 17 plays and a single first down in the first half. Austin got the second-half kickoff and ran off a 13-play, 63-yard drive with all the plays being running efforts by senior halfback Cam Dunn (16 carries for 51 yards) and junior fullback Patrick Delaney (34 yards on 9 carries).
Dunn scored on a 3-yard run
AP would stop a Mustang drive at its own 37 and the ensuing punt was downed at the 17. Austin got out to the 32, but the drive stalled and a weak punt out of bounds set Medford up at the Austin 45. The Mustangs would take six running plays in the march to the end zone.
The biggest play of the series was the last one, a fourth and 3 from the 6 when sophomore quarterback Mike Sullivan sprinted to his right and escaped the rush and lobbed a pass to the end zone which found Chery on his knees where he cradled the ball into his arms for the score. He then added the conversion rush for the final score of 22-8.
