One of the fun events the players on the team look forward to each season is the PHS Alumni vs. Varsity game.  This year’s event will take place on Friday, December 30, 2022, from 2:00 - 3:30 pm at the Abbey.

The game is a great way for all hockey players who have worn the Patriots uniform to connect on the ice through the sport they love, now in its 37th season at PHS.  A team tradition, this “unofficial game” pits past members of Portsmouth’s hockey teams against the current varsity squad.

The contest is played in the style of a pick-up game; checking is not allowed, and there is (usually) no game clock.  One of the varsity coaches, or their designee, will serve as a referee.  The winners earn bragging rights for the next year.  Everybody on the current varsity team will play and have a chance to test their skills against some of the best players from past Patriots hockey teams.  Helping to connect the present and past players, the current team members will loan their ‘away’ game jerseys to the alumni for the contest, making it an all-Portsmouth event.  Spectators are welcome, and there is no charge to attend.

All members of past Portsmouth High School varsity hockey teams are invited to come out and take on the current squad.  It doesn’t matter how long it has been since you last played.  Get to the Abbey, lace ‘em up, and get on the ice.  You’ll have fun, see some of your old teammates, and meet the players on today’s team   Alumni interested in playing should be at the rink dressed and ready to take the ice at 2:00 pm; no prior sign-up is required.  Former PHS hockey coaches are welcome to come to the game and “manage” the alumni bench.  For questions about the event, please contact Head Coach Greg Cunningham at 401-714-6912.
