Quincy Hill scored on a 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal, and Jake Hamilton hit the game-winning extra point as Spring Valley outlasted rival Richland Northeast 49-48 in four overtimes Saturday at Harry Parone Stadium.

It was the Vikings’ fifth straight win over their Richland District 2 rivals.

“It looked like for a while there we didn’t have a chance to get back in,” Spring Valley coach Robin Bacon said. “But we preached to our kids to finish. We put on the back of their shirts ‘Finish.’ … These kids are resilient and they never hung their heads.”

Spring Valley trailed 21-18 with less than two minutes to go in regulation and didn’t have any timeouts with Richland Northeast facing a fourth-and-1 at Spring Valley’s 37-yard line. But Spring Valley’s Da’Prince Haynes recovered a bad snap to give the Vikings a chance to tie or win in regulation.

The Vikings used a hook-and-ladder to Terrell Jackson to get to the RNE 47 with 1:08 left. Hill hit two straight passes and then heaved one to Cameron Thomas, who made a leaping 23-yard grab to move it to the 4-yard line. Hamilton connected on the 21-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to tie the game at 21-21 and force overtime.

The teams exchanged scores and extra points in the first three overtimes. In the fourth overtime, RNE’s Tyquandre Davis scored on a 2-yard run to make it 48-42, but Grayson Maxfield’s extra point attempt was short.

TURNING POINT

Richland Northeast needed just one first down to run the clock out in regulation, but fumbled on fourth-and-short to give the Vikings a chance.
