Storm clouds couldn’t stop ‘Field of Dreams’ game
6/9/2016

With the ominous threat of storm clouds and rain showers threatening to derail the National's "Field Of Dreams Game," the rain subsided, and with it, came a few rays of sunshine and much anticipated baseball.

The Wachusett Nationals packed enough thunder in their bats to prevail and win their fourth game in a row, against the FitchburgRed Sox on Sunday, June 5, by a score of 9-3.

The "Field Of Dreams Game" started with a moving tribute to Capt. Christopher J. Sullivan formerly of Princeton who was tragically killed while on deployment to Iraq in 2005.

The ceremony, attended by both of his parents, Jim and Dolly Sullivan, was equally moving to the more than 50 spectators in attendance gathered to cheer for their hometown club, The Wachusett Nationals.

The game started quickly with the Red Sox jumping out to a two-run lead in the first inning. Just as a light sprinkle of misty rain was blanketing the field, the Wachusett bats came alive and brought a deluge of runs across the plate thanks to a clutch RBI single by catcher Shawn Sullivan, scoring Mike Macieko from second.

After scoring two more runs in the third inning on a ground out by Craig Ludwig and an RBI single by Tom Kokernak, the Nationals never trailed again.

The Nationals scored an additional three runs in the sixth inning due to aggressive base running and two hits by RF Greg Shuler who doubled and a two-run double by Doug Nashold SS, that appeared to be leaving the ball park.

The Nationals' Ludwig, Nashold, Sullivan and Shuler combined for seven hits and eight RBI'S including two extra base hits for the short stop, Doug Nashold.

Jerry Patraitis recorded his second win for the Nationals allowing two runs over six innings. Patraitis struck out two, walked two and gave up six hits to earn the win.

Tom Kokernak came on in relief in the seventh inning to shut down the Fitchburg Red Sox and claim the victory. The Nationals record improves to 4-2.

Ticket sales and fundraising for the "Field Of Dreams Game" resulted in $2,000 raised for the Capt. Christopher J. Sullivan Liberty Scholarship Award Fund.
