A few weeks back, both the Eagles Varsity and JV teams went into Thousand Oaks and came away with one goal victories - triple overtime in the case of the JV squad. Well, the Lancers turned the tables on Wednesday night. Thousand Oaks took both Oak Park teams into overtime and came out ahead. JV lost 4-5, and Varsity lost 9-10. This is the 7th Varsity game to be decided by a one goal differential this season.
In the JV game, the Lancers got on the board first, but Oak Park scored the next three goals and held a 3-1 lead at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, Thousand Oaks scored twice and Oak Pak once which kept the Eagles ahead 4-3 going into the last quarter. Both teams were scoreless deep into the 4th quarter. However, with 0:31 remaining, the Lancers scored to tie it up and send the game into overtime. Just over a minute into the OT period, Thousand Oaks scored the game winner. Evan Saravis scored 2 goals and had 1 assist. Brandon Coppel and Stephen Bernstein each scored 1 goal. Owen Consoletti notched an assist.
In the Varsity match up, the Lancers were dominant on faceoffs. In each of the first three quarters, the Lancers won the opening faceoff and scored in under a minute. However, the game never got away from the Eagles. The teams were tied 3-3 at halftime. And except for about one minute in the third quarter, the teams traded goals and remained tied or within one goal of each other. Thousand Oaks led 6-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter. But the Eagles scored twice and took an 8-7 lead half way through the 4th quarter. The Lancers then responded with two goals of their own to move ahead 8-9. At the 1:55 mark, Tyler Chandler scored the tying goal that pushed the game into overtime. The Eagles had a strong possession with multiple shots, but could not find the back of the net. A groundball turned into an unsettled fastbreak that ended in the Lancer's winning goal.
Griffin Hughes scored 4 goals. Tyler Chandler put in 3 goals. Matt Johnson and Ryan Shorts each scored a goal. Hunter Jamison, Ryan Helfand, and Alex Wenker each had an assist.
The Eagles play their next game on Friday (4/14) at Newbury Park High School.
