SJ Tigers Defeat Yankees in Hit Parade, Win 24 - 11

Bolstered by a 13 run ninth inning and a 24-hit performance, the SJ Tigers offense overwhelmed the Yankees on Sunday morning in a 24-11 win at Robert K. Shafer Middle School baseball field.

Trailing 8-1, SJ Tigers sounded off for ten runs in the top of the seventh. But, the Yankees came right back and sounded off 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up. In the ninth, the Tigers put up an amazing fireworks display which diminished the achievements of the Yankees. The Tigers scored 13 runs in the ninth to take the lead for good.

The final score makes the Tigers/Yankees hit parade look more like a high school football game–but don’t be confused, it was indeed an adult competitive baseball game. Pitchers from both teams looked sharp, but it was the bats that did the talking.

Seven Tigers hitters enjoyed multi-hit games. George Turner doubled twice while Tommy Gardiner, Joan Hereida, Mike Terlizzi, and Jimmy McGovern registered one double each. Terlizzi, McGovern, and Turner collected three RBIs each. Followed by Jose Hernandez, Tommy Gardiner, Brian Halfin, and Joan Hereida with two RBIs each. Richie Rodriguez collected one RBI as well. Overall, the Tigers recorded twenty three hits, twenty four runs, and drew six walks, while only striking-out six.

Brian Halfin pitched seven innings on the mound, allowing 8 earned runs, on 9 hits while striking out two and walking just 4.

Mike Terlizzi replaced Brian on the eighth inning. He pitched two strong innings, turning off the fire and shutting down the Yankees for the remaining of the game. He allowed just one hit and stroke out one batter.

S.J Tigers return to action on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Springfield High School Varsity field for a double header against the Springfield Cardinals.
