CYPRESS – Cypress has won many Empire League baseball championships this century. Few were clinched as dramatically as this season’s championship.

The Centurions secured a share of the title Tuesday with a 5-4, comeback win over Pacifica in eight innings at Cypress High.

Cypress trailed Pacifica by three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Noah Carter’s three-run home run tied the score and sent it into extra innings.

Mike Marsh hit a two-out, walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for the winning run.

Cypress and Pacifica were tied for first going into the week, the final week of the regular season. The win gives the Centurions a 9-0 league record. Pacifica is 8-1.

Cypress (21-7-1 overall) plays at Pacifica (18-11) on Thursday in the teams’ final game of the regular season. If Pacifica wins it would be Empire League co-champion.

The Centurions trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. There were two outs, two runners on base – Elias Rios on second base and Tyler Chaffee on first – and a 1-1 count when Carter lifted a homer over the fence in left-center field to tie it 4-4.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Marsh’s winning homer cleared the fence near the same location as Carter’s homer.

Marsh before his at-bat received specific instructions from Cypress coach John Weber.

“When I was on deck,” Marsh said, “’Web’ told me to go up there, step off of the plate and look for something to hit over the fence and that’s what I did.”

The win clinched a sixth straight league championship for the Centurions. It is their 13th league title of the 21st century.

The Mariners scored an unearned run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Cypress tied it in the bottom half of the inning on an unearned run.

Pacifica scored twice in the fifth inning. Robert Santos doubled in Matthew Mosleno. Nathan Petrutis followed with a double to drive in Santos for a 3-1 lead.

The Mariners got another unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it 4-1.

Cypress is No. 9 in the Register’s Orange County top 25 and No. 8 in CIF-SS Division 1. Pacifica is ranked No. 22 in the county and No. 7 in Division 3.
