The fifth and final game of the Junior Championship Series in the North Dufferin Baseball League was played last night in Barrie, with the Barrie Red Sox defeating the Bolton Braves and taking the series by three games to two.
The series was tied going into last night's game, each team having two wins. The first game on August 20 ended with a 5-4 decision for Barrie, while Bolton took game two 7-3. The third game Barrie came back with a score of 7-3 and Bolton won the fourth game with a 3-2 score.
Game five took two extra innings, for a total of nine to complete the game. Bolton scored two runs in the first inning and it was not until the third and fourth frames that Barrie was able to catch up with a run in each inning. The score remained unchanged until the ninth when Bolton scored in their half of the inning. However, Barrie's determination was strong and in their half, with one run already scored, bases loaded, Barrie executed a suicide squeeze and scored their fourth run to win the game.
"Bolton and Barrie played an excellent series and the fifth game was no exception taking 9 innings to complete," Secretary Scott Anderson and junior convenor of the N.D.B.L. stated about the championship series. "Both teams had terrific pitching and good defence and was most enjoyable to watch."
"I commend Bolton for their hard fought battle and glad to see the series took five games," Anderson added. "What a pleasure to see great baseball at the junior level in the North Dufferin Baseball League."
