Yesterday (August 26), the North Dufferin Baseball League junior championship series concluded with the Barrie Red Sox defeating the Richmond Hill Phoenix in two games, 2-1 and 3-0.
Both games were played at Lampman Park in Barrie with the first starting at 3 p.m. The Red Sox and Phoenix battled throughout the game and after six innings of play the score was tied at one. In the bottom of the seventh, with extra innings looming, Barrie scored on a Richmond Hill error to win the game 2-1.
During the second game, Barrie went up early scoring two runs in the second inning and didn't relinquish the lead scoring another run in the fifth. Richmond Hill was unable to capitalize during their half of the fifth with runners on base. Barrie kept Richmond Hill off the score sheet for the rest of the game clinching the junior championship with a 3-0 score.
NDBL secretary and junior division convenor Scott Anderson presented the newly commissioned Anderson Trophy for the junior division champions to Barrie. He also congratulated both the Red Sox and Phoenix on their play this season.
In the senior division, the Ivy Leafs and New Lowell Knights wrapped up their semi-final series when the Knights beat the Leafs 8-3 in game five. New Lowell moves on to face the Bolton Brewers who defeated Clearview Orioles in three games. The championship series will start on Sept. 8.
