News and Notes from Camas vs Prairie
2/21/2010by Greg Jayne

News and notes from the Camas girls' district basketball title, which was as historic as it was impressive. Here's the story on the Papermakers' 59-46 victory over Prairie. And be sure to note the outstanding photo by Steve Lane.

By our count, Prairie had won 136 consecutive games in league competition, combining the regular season and district tournaments. The Falcons hadn't lost to a league foe since Jan. 31, 1990, which, according to our calendar, was more than a decade ago. The Falcons also had won 12 straight district tournaments.

Make no mistake, this isn't a vintage Prairie team. And the Falcons weren't helped when Heather Corral suffered a knee injury early in the season. But you can't take anything away from Camas, which has an impressive collection of athletes. The Papermakers start two 6-footers and two 5-11 players, and they have some long arms that create havoc on the defensive end.

— Prairie coach Al Aldridge said: "We'll regroup; we'll be alright. We were just ineffective in a lot of things tonight. You've got to give credit to Camas. We tried to put heat on them, and they responded."

— Camas freshman Kendra Preuninger made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points — eight of them in the final three minutes. So we'll forgive her for getting a little ahead of herself.

Asked how she felt as the final seconds ticked down, she said, "I was just thinking, 'State, state, our team's going to state.' " But first the Papermakers need to make it out of the bi-district tournament. Eight teams from the 16-team bi-district tournament will advance to state.

— Kayla Roche was 8 of 11 from the field, finishing with 16 points and seven rebounds for Camas.

— Camas post player Haley Smith finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. But 6-foot-2 Prairie freshman Emily Rowe held her own with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Smith said Camas got a lift when Prairie moved from 4A to 3A at the start of the 2008-09 school year: "They got in our league, and we realized how good they are and that we want to be like that team."

— The Papermakers' defense was a big reason the Falcons shot 33 percent from the field. Aside from Rowe's 9-of-12 performance, Prairie was 10 of 46 for 22 percent. The Falcons also went 3 of 18 from 3-point range.

— Freshman Jackie Lanz gave Prairie a big lift off the bench with 11 points, three rebounds and two steals.

— Camas junior Melissa Williams said she has lived in the Vancouver area all her life. How long has she been aware of Prairie girls basketball? "Since I was in third grade. We all know Prairie is a powerhouse team."

Just think: As far back as Melissa Williams can remember, Prairie had never lost to a league foe. Until now.
