About the COLUMBUS COMETS

HISTORY

The Columbus Comets are a women's professional American football team based in Columbus, Ohio. NCAA rules do apply with exceptions to ball size, kick-off placement (35 yd line), overtime (NCAA rules).   The Columbus Comets play full contact tackle football.  We are currently a member of the Women's Football Alliance (WFA)

In 2003, the Columbus Flames, a member of the NWFA, owned by Donna Ford completed the 2003 season and the team transferred ownership at the end of the season.  The new ownership group changed the name to the Columbus Comets.  The Columbus Comets also began play in the National Women's Football Association (NWFA)  from their inception in 2004 until 2008.  On April 24, 2004, NFL Draft Day, the Columbus Comets were the first women's professional football team to play a regular season game in a NFL venue at the Cleveland Browns Stadium.  The Columbus Comets played the Cleveland Fusion and the Comets won 20 - 7.

In 2009, the NWFA ceased operations and the Columbus Comets joined the newly organized Women's Football Alliance (WFA). In January 2010, head coach Hank Patterson / HP Sports, INC purchased the team and  became the new owner of the Columbus Comets. Hank Patterson also remained as head coach of the Columbus Comets team.  The journey continues....
