The Central Plains Female Capitals was a new initiative under the Central Plains Regional Minor Hockey Association as set out by Hockey Manitoba in 2007-08. The Regional Associations as defined under Hockey Manitoba are responsible for operation of all Midget Regional Teams and along with the Female Program operates the Midget AAA Captials of the Hockey Manitoba Provincial Midget League, the Jr. Capitals (15-16 year program), 2 Male AAA Bantam and 1 AAA Female Bantam team.
It is the intent of the program to provide midget and bantam aged female hockey players in Central Plains with the same opportunity to play at an elite level through the formation of Regional Teams as their male counterparts receive.
In 2007-08 the Female Midget Programs did not play in an organized league but rather scheduled exhibition games and some designated tournaments in the hope to eventually participate in a Provincial Female Midget League. The Female Capitals saw that change in 2008-09 when with the cooperation of existing programs in Rural Manitoba the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League was formed leading to a 16 game schedule the team could build their season around. The team entered 3 tournaments including the Provincial Championships and played an interlocking schedule with teams from Winnipeg which lead to a very competitive 40 game schedule.
The Team hoped to build on a successful first year as a stand alone program where they only had one graduating player and returned a majority of the team that saw 7 players go to the 120 first round of POE and 2 to second round of 40. This has come to fruition and over the past 4 years with the Capitals placing numerous players in the Hockey Manitoba Program of Excellence (POE) who have moved onto the Top 40, Final 25, U18 Team Manitoba and moved onto CIS or NCAA University Programs along with the MAnitoba Women's Junior Hockey League.
It is the goal of the Central Plains Capitals to provide a complete program for their players in the hope they can move onto a higher level of Hockey once they graduate from the Midget ranks. In doing so they play a very competitive MFMHL regular and playoff season along with a Tournament and Exhibition game schedule that leads to 55 plus games. The Capitals now host a Preseason Showcase that has CIS, NCAA and ACAC coaches along with a Hockey Canada Regional Scout attend to evaluate players. The Team practices 2-3 x/week on ice to go along with dryland training and fitness testing to provide a complete and well rounded program for players to progress under the guidance of certified coaches.
