About the Crescent Valley Ski Race Team

The aim of the CVSRT is to develop members as athletes, teammates, skiers and racers.

Learn to Ski Race

Alpine ski racing is a very demanding athletic pursuit and is available to high school students in Oregon through OSSA. It requires a high level of physical and mental fitness, self discipline, dedication and preparation to be competitive.

Fitness, Ski skills, and Race technique

Our coaching is focused on three things, the first two of which form the foundation for strong racers:

  • Overall fitness, working on both endurance and strength, including the core and legs.
  • Basic skiing skills, including safety, stretching, pole planting and equipment care
  • Racing technique and skills.

Join the Team and Have Fun

CV’s Ski Team is a great way to bond with a great group of diverse students from all grade levels.
Some of the fun activities we enjoy as a team:

  • Ice Skating
  • End of season party
  • Ski training camp for 3-4 days over winter break.

We ski, train, learn technique, but also enjoy team meals, games, hanging out, free skiing, and ski tuning sessions.

Overview

Message from Paul Richards – Club President 9/22/21

Covid had a dramatic effect on ski racing this last year.   I expect that to continue to some degree this year.    The planning for this season is just beginning so I have very few specific details to share.

Last year, in the height of COVID, we had one of the best racing seasons that I have experienced (I’m on child 3 so I’ve been doing this for about 6 years).  We will be racing this year, I just don’t know what it will look like yet.

What I do know:

Last year, teams had very low turnout due to Covid (I also did zero recruiting as the season was in jeopardy for months).  For economic reasons, we combined West Albany (1 racer) with CHS (7 racers), and CV (2 racers) under one coach.  We are repeating that scenario this year and will be adding one or more racers from Philomath.  Teams will be scored separately, but we will train together.

Expectations from families:

Prospective racers should ski at the intermediate level or higher.  The coach is a race instructor, not a ski instructor.

This is unlike other high school sports.  The parents are heavily involved so this requires a large commitment from teens as well as parents.  Parents are expected to help run the races (with training). We will be racing every week for the months of January and February.  The state championship (if racer qualifies) is the first week of March.
