About the Haddonfield Crew Club

Haddonfield Crew

Haddonfield Crew is a full Varsity sport for both boys and girls at Haddonfield Memorial High School.  It is governed by the Athletic Department and rowers are subject to all the Athletic Department Rules and Regulations. However, the Haddonfield Crew Club, Inc. is a tax exempt New Jersey non-profit corporation which finances and operates Crew.  All coaches are still approved and supervised through the HMHS Athletic Department.

Haddonfield Crew Club was established in 2003, as interest in high school rowing in South Jersey was growing.  For the first several years, the club rowed out of a ramshackle ramp near the Cuthbert Avenue bridge over the Cooper River in Cherry Hill.  In the summer of 2006, the Camden County Boathouse opened on the Cooper River in Pennsauken and the club bunked in with several other high school, college and independent crew clubs. The state of the art facility is one of the nicest facilities in the area for Crew, which presently houses six large boat bays, locker rooms, and a meeting and banquet facility which hosts group meetings, weddings and other private celebrations.  The Boathouse is located on Cooper River, which is considered one of the best rowing venues in the country and regularly hosts many scholastic, collegiate and master level events including the IRA Championships, the Ivy League Championships, the Garden State Championships, the SRAA National Championship, and the Masters Club Nationals. The Cooper River has undergone a  major dredging project in late 2015 and early 2016 which has only enhanced the already competitive race course.

Though completely funded by members and their families, the sport achieved Varsity status at Haddonfield Memorial High School in 2007.  The student athletes were able to obtain Varsity letters like other sports at the high school.  The club began its first Fall varsity season in 2008 and continues to present, rowing in both a Fall and Spring season each academic year. Haddonfield Crew's roster varies from year to year and season to season, but we are always looking to bring more boys and girls to the club and the experience of rowing.

Haddonfield competes in many major regattas in the Mid-Atlantic region, considered the cradle of American rowing.  Races include the Manny Flicks Series on the Schuylkill River, the Stotesbury Regatta (the largest high school regatta in the country) and the Scholastic Rowing Association National Regatta, which determines high school national champions. The hard work and dedication of our rowers has been rewarded with medals obtained at all levels of competition.

Crew provides athletes with an opportunity to compete at the collegiate level and many club rowers have obtained scholarships and other assistance to row for their college or university. Many of Haddonfield Crew's rowers have gone on to row in a number of colleges and universities across the United States, including: University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, SMU, Clemson, Drexel, Stanford, Haverford, University of Vermont and many others.

Haddonfield Memorial High School has been the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association "ShopRite Cup" winner for Best High School Athletic Program in New Jersey (Group 2) for TEN consecutive years and the Haddonfield Crew varsity athletes are proud to represent such a successful athletic program.
