About the Irondequoit Hockey

The Irondequoit High School Eagles Ice Hockey team is playing in its 50th season in 2017-18. The Monroe County Hockey League started in 1968-69 with six teams, with Aquinas, McQuaid, Fairport, Brighton and Monroe, in addition to the Irondequoit Indians as the Original 6. In that inaugural season, the Indians won the Regular Season and League Playoff Title, their first of eight (8) championships in Monroe County/Section V. The first coach was Andy Laing, who later coached the Rochester Monarchs in the ‘70’s and went on to coach in the OHL and minor pro hockey. The program almost had to shut down in the early ‘70’s because they couldn’t find a coach. The school’s legendary lacrosse coach John Pratt stepped in to keep the team alive, and in the following season was succeeded by future New York State High School Hockey Hall of Fame Coach Al Maerz. As the league grew and expanded, the Indians got stronger under Maerz. His 303 wins is the 2nd winningest coaching record in Section V history. Terry MacAdam, Rick Giuffrida, Long-time assistant Tim Fleche and several others have also guided the Indians/Eagles to a respected position in Section V hockey world, and enjoys long-standing rivalries throughout the league. Irondequoit Hockey is proud to carry on the tradition that was started 50 years ago and look forward to many more seasons to come. The team has hundreds of alumni and their families who continue to actively support the program, and we thank you for your continued dedication and support.
