Northwood 23- Whittier Christian 58

Northwood held tough in the first quarter but eventually the hot 3-pt shooting from Whittier Christian proved too much for the Timberwolves.  Just one of those nights where the rims seemed to have lids on them as senior guard Erin Matsutsuyu was held to only 18 points, which for her qualifies as an off-night this season.  Four other players contributed to the scoring: Stacy Kikuchi (3), Sophie Grossman (2), Erin Halle (2), and Kara Chu (2).

One highlight did come from junior Sophie Grossman, who pulled down a season-high 18 rebounds.

Tough loss for the Timberwolves as they prepare for their league opener against Woodbridge on Tuesday.

Northwood 31- Mission Viejo 43

Northwood came up short in an away non-conference game, falling to the Lady Diablos 43-31.  Despite 25 points from senior guard Erin Matsutsuyu, the Timberwolves just couldn't get the rest of the offense going.  Sophie Grossman and Erin Halle added 3 points apiece in a difficult game on offense for Northwood.

Garden Grove Tournament

Northwood 48- Nogales 39

Tonight's win against Nogales was one of the most balanced team wins for the T-Wolves all season with contributions from a number of players.  Senior Erin Matsutsuyu led the way with 24 points on a dazzling array of 2-pt and 3-pt shots as well as playing aggressive perimeter defense with 4 steals.

Stepping in with a career-high 8 points was freshmen Kara Chu whose early hot hand helped Northwood take a lead from the outset that they would never relinquish.  Sophomore Amanda Endres added 5 points including a nice pull-up jumper for a 3-pt play.  Rounding out the scoring were Chloe Tak (4), Emily Ozima (3), Sophie Grossman (2), and Addie Littlejohn (2).

Defensively, junior Sophie Grossman played lockdown defense on Nogales' top scorer while pulling down 9 rebounds.  Junior Chloe Tak pulled down 11 rebounds and played outstanding help defense whenever Nogales tried to drive to the basket.

With the win, Northwood captured 3rd place in the tournament with a 3-1 record .  Their only loss was to the eventual champion Bell Gardens.   Northwood now brings its record to 6-6 heading into the final two games of preseason. League play begins on Tuesday, January 9th.

Garden Grove Tournament

Northwood 26 - Bell Gardens 50

A tough night for the T-Wolves as they fell to an aggressive Bell Gardens team in the semi-finals of the Garden Grove Tournament 50-26. Erin Matutsuyu led the scoring with 19 for the T-Wolves on a night where it seemed the baskets had lids on them.  The Lancers used an aggressive trapping defense to create some easy points off turnovers and found the range from behind the 3-pt arc.  In the end, it was just too much for the Timberwolves who will next face Nogales for 3rd place in their final game on Saturday night at 6pm.

Garden Grove Tournament

Northwood 49- La Habra 43

At some point later this season, the T-Wolves will find themselves in a game that sees multiple lead changes and isn't decided until the final minute.  They will look back at this win against La Habra as valuable expereince for how to play with poise under pressure.

Tied at halftime, the lead see-sawed back and forth with Northwood falling behind by 6 points in the 4th quarter. At that point, the defense picked it up at notch and Addy Littlejohn's two clutch free throws tried the game at 43.  From then on, the T-Wolves put the ball in the hands of Erin Matsutsuyu who scored the final 6 points to seal the victory. Matsutsuyu finished the game with 37 points including 11 clutch free-throws and 18 from behind the arc.

Anchoring the defense were juniors Sophie Grossman and Chloe Tak. Grossman pulled down 14 boards while Tak added another 7, all while playing tough in the interior against La Habra.  Quick close-outs on the perimeter from Emily Ozima and Stacy Kikuchi forced La Habra into tough shots the entire game.

Rounding out the scoring: Grossman (4), Littlejohn (4), Tak (3), Kikuchi (1).

Great win for Northwood putting them into semi-finals of the Garden Grove Tournament (Silver Division).

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 54, Irvine 43

Three weeks since a heart-breaking league opening loss to rivals Irvine, the T-Wolves put together one of their finest games of the season to avenge their loss on the Vaqueros home court.  Junior Erin Matsutsuyu continued to thrill and amaze as she poured in 35 points to lead the T-Wolves.  That marks back-to-back 30+ point games as the guard dazzled with an array of drives to the basket, step backs to the 3-pt line and morale-destroying steals for breakaway baskets.  The Vaqueros had no answer for #1!

The game was physical from the outset as these two rivals battled it out.  Senior Leila Mohammi and Nada Bassyoni proved to be more than a match for Irvine's big frontline.  Bassyoni pulled down 4 rebounds and scored 8 points, including a 3-pointer in the final minutes that put a dagger in the heart of a Vaquero comeback.  Junior Addie Littlejohn was a force on the boards with 6 rebounds as she and senior Jessica Dang partnered to play a tough interior defense.  Senior Lauren Ta came back from Tuesday's ankle injury to play suffocating defense on the perimeter and add 5 points to the T-Wolves offensive output.

Northwood will take its 2-game win streak up against the Woodbridge Warriors (4-2 in league) on Tuesday, January 31st in a home game at Northwood High (5:30pm)

Northwood 59, Corona Del Mar 55

With an effort that shows why Erin Matsutsuyu is one of the top playes in the county, the junior guard poured in 38 points to lead the T-Wolves to their first league victory in front of a home crowd at Northwood.  It was a roller-coaster ride for Coach Bowie's team as they jumped out a quick 21-10 lead at half behind Matsutsuyu's outside shooting and pressure defense which resulted in several steals.

As quickly as Northwood stormed out to a lead, the Sea Queens stormed back in the 2nd quarter and the girls entered the locker room with a two-point lead at 25-23.  In the 3rd quarter and early 4th, CDM looked to be in control, extending their lead to 12 points at one time in the 4th quarter.

The T-Wolves were not to be denied their first league win, mounting a furious comeback. A sprained ankle sent senior Lauren Ta to the bench but big baskets from Mohammadi and Littlejohn led the way along with continued torrid shooting from Matsutsuyu.  The T-Wolves nearly won the game on a tantalizing, in-and-out jumper at the buzzer by Stacy Kikuchi but it was overtime in the cards.  In overtime, the game went back and forth until a foul against Erin Matsutsuyu sent her to the line for a 1-and-1. The junior calmly sank those free throws to cap off an incredible performance and Northwood held on for the 59-55 Pacific Coast League win.

With that win, the first round of league play concludes.  Northwood currently stands in 5th place in league.  The 2nd round begins Friday, 1/27 with a shot at redemption against Irvine in a rematch of the nail-biting league opener.

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 39, Beckman 55

At the end of the 1st quarter, the T-Wolves were down but the momentum seemed to be doign our way.  A couple of missed shots go in and we're right back in the game.  But, in the 2nd quarter, the shots just didn't fall.  Although the defense kept Northwood in the game, Beckman took an 11-pt lead into the half and extended it in the 3rd quarter.  The T-Wolves showed a lot of heart in the 4th quarter but it was too little, too late against the Beckman attack.

Senior Lauren Ta led all scorers with 14 while Erin Matsutsuyu added 13 points.  Roudning out the scoring were Mohammadi (6), Dang (3), Littlejohn (2), and Bassyoni (1).  Mohammadi had a strong game on the boards with 8 as did Habibeh (5) in a gritty effort.

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 29, Woodbridge 42

The game started off well for Northwood as they took a 5-point lead into the locker room at halftime.  Sharp shooting from junior Erin Matsutsuyu and senior Lauren Ta paced the T-Wolves while senior Masah Habibeh steadied the defense and was a strong presence on teh boards.

The 3rd quarter was another story as the Warriors came out with an intensity far different than the first half and one that Northwood just didn't match.  A 17-3 run put the game out of reach with the Warriors crashing the boards to get repeated second chance baskets.

Scoring: Matsutsuyu (13), Ta (11), Mohammadi (2), Ta (2), and Habibeh (1)

Rebounding: Habibeh (6), Matsutsuyu (4), Mohammadi (4)

The T-Wolves will seek to bounce back with a win against Beckman @ Beckman on Thursday, January 19th.

T-Wolves JV

Northwood 28, Woodbridge 38

The T-Wolves started slowly and  the first period ended with the only Northwood point being a single free throw.  The T-Wolves just didn’t have a defense against the Twin Towers of Woodbridge and the rest of their sharpshooters.  In the second half, the Timberwolves fought back and the shots started to fall.  Freshman Amanda Endres and Sophomore Josephine Cheung led the barrage from outside as the T-Wolves made a run.  In the end, it was too little too late and Northwood fell to a tough loss against a strong Woodbridge team.

Scoring Leaders: Josephine Cheung (14), Amanda Endres (10), Maddie Atencio (2) and Michelle Lim (2).

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 24, University 41

A three-point halftime lead for the T-Wolves evaporated in the second half as the offense just couldn't get anything going while the Trojans picked up the intensity with strong interior play.  There were very few second chance opportunities as Uni's post players did an excellent job on the boards, signficantly outrebounding Northwood.

Erin Matsutsuyu led all scorers with 7 while Leila Mohammadi added 6 and Lauren Ta scored 4.  Emily Ozima nailed a nice 3-pointer while Nada Bassyoni (2), Addie Littlejohn (1) and Masah Habibeh (1) tallied up the rest of the points for Northwood.  Senior Leila Mohammadi continued to be a force on the boards, adding 9 more to her team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game average. Habibeh and Bassyoni added 5 boards apiece.

The T-Wolves will look for their first league win in an away game against Woodbridge this Friday, January 13th.

Nothing more and nothing less. It was truly a nail biter. Both the Timberwolves and Trojans engaged early on. The T-Wolves were behind by 6 points at halftime. Josephine Cheung and Amanda Endres combined to nail 5 3-pointers but a last minute shot wouldn’t fall and at 43-43, the game went to OT. The intensity was high. The crowd’s oooh’s and aaah’s filled the arena whenever there was a miss or a shot made. The T-Wolves made a free throw in OT but a bucket in the final seconds by the Trojans proved to be difference as the T-Wolves were handed a loss.  Surely it was a heart-breaking loss and the T-Wolves will be ready for the next match-up. Priya Gima scored a season-high 10 points. Both Amanda Endres and Josephine Cheung added 12 points each. Rounding out the scoring were Danny Velandia (2), Maddie Atencio (2) and Michelle Lim (6).

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 36, Mission Viejo 23

The T-Wolves showed incredible resiliency in bouncing back from the gut-wrenching loss the night before and took out their frustrations on the Lady Diablos of Mission Viejo.  A slow start in the first-half left the T-Wolves behind two points at halftime but an 11-2 run in the 3rd gave them a strong cushion and they put it away with tough defense and strong shooting in the 4th quarter.

Strong ball movement created opportunities for the guards to penetrate and dish as well as feed the post for easy buckets.  Senior Leila Mohammadi led all scorers with 9 points while Lauren Ta and Erin Matsutsuyu contributed 8 points apiece.  Rounding out the scoring were Masah Habibeh (6), Nada Bassyoni (4), and Emily Ozima (1).

Northwood 36, Mission Viejo 20

Both the T-Wolves and the Lady Diablos of Mission Viejo had a slow start and low shooting percentages. The first period ended with the T-Wolves in the lead and they extended that lead behind some sharp shooting to 12 points at halftime. In the second half, the T-Wolves never looked back as they maintained a safe cushion until the buzzer sounded.

The leading scorer was Josephine Cheung (17) while Maddie Atencio (9), Amanda Endres (6), Maryam Kazi (2) and Priya Gima (2) contributed strongly to the scoreboard.

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 40, Irvine 41

A heart-breaking last second bucket by the Vaqueros sent the Timberwolves to a loss in this season's league opener in a see-saw battle that featured numerous lead changes and mini runs by both teams.  Truly an incredibly even match-up that could have gone either way, there is no doubt the T-Wolves will be geared up to avenge the loss when they visit Irvine on 1/26.

Northwood featured a balanced offense with four players sharing the team lead in points with 7 piece (Masah Habibeh, Nada Bassyoni, Erin Matsutsuyu and Lauren Ta) while Chloe Tak added 6 points and Stacy Kikuchi and Addie Littlejohn scored 3 points each.

Leila Mohammadi and Masah Habibeh pulled down 7 rebounds against a tough front line from Irvine.

The Timberwolves sent the Vaqueros to a loss in this season’s league opener. The T-Wolves had an early lead on an 11-5 run in the 1st period and solidified the lead going into halftime. T-Wolves held on to the lead in the 3rd period and fought back a furious 18-6 Vaquero won to secure the victory.

The T-Wolves had a strong showing of teamwork and excellent defense. Amanda Endres pulled down 6 rebounds. Josephine Cheung and Priya Gima 5 rebounds each. Josephine Cheung led all scorers with 19 points while Amanda Endres added 10. Rounding out the scoring were Michelle Lim (7), Priya Gima (2) and Maddie Atencio (2).

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 35, Segerstrom 68

Northwood fell behind early and never really was able to make a dent in the offensive onslaught from Segerstrom, who shot over 50% from the field and nearly 40% from behind the 3-pt arc.  Turnovers doomed the T-Wolves as they led to easy transition baskets and kept Northwood's offense from establishing the flow and motion they needed.

Junor Erin Matsutsuyu led the t-Wolves with 15 points while senior Leila Mohammadi contributed 8 points to go along with her team-leading 9 rebounds.  Rounding out the scoring were Nada Bassyoni (4), Sophie Grossman (4), Lauren Ta (2) and Chloe Tak (2).

T-Wolves Varsity

Northwood 34, Westminster 49

The Corona del Mar Tip-Off Tourney kicked off the 2016-2017 season for the Timberwolves.  In a tough season-opening loss, Northwood fell 49-34 to the Lions of Westminster High School.  The Timberwolves put themselves in a deep hole as Westminster raced out to a large first half lead.  Opening game nerves might have played a role as the shots just didn’t fall for Northwood despite a number of good looks at the basket and turnovers were uncharacteristically high.  While Northwood out-played the Lions in the second half, it was a case of too little, too late to catch up.

Senior Lauren Ta led the T-Wolves in scoring with 11 points while senior Masah Habibeh led the team with 7 rebounds to go along with her 4 points.  Junior Erin Matsutsuyu added 4 assists and 4 steals to go along with 7 points.  Senior Leila Mohammadi contributed 6 points in the paint.  Rounding out the scoring were Emily Ozima (3), Addison Littlejohn (2), and Sophie Grossman (1).

Next game in the CdM Tip-Off Tourney will be against Laguna Hills on 11/30.
