St. Michael’s College School iced its first hockey team under the direction of Fr. Henry Carr in 1906. Prior to the 1933/34 season the Ontario Hockey Association divided their Junior Division into “Jr. A” and “Jr. B”. St. Mike’s had enough talent to compete at both levels and named their “Jr. A” team the “Majors”. The Majors competed in the O.H.A. from 1933 through 1961 winning Memorial Cup championships in 1934, 1945, 1947 and 1961. The Majors returned in 1996 when they joined the OHL and competed through 2012 when they were sold and became the Mississauga Steelheads. St. Mike’s revamped their Varsity Hockey progam for the 2012/13 season under the direction of former Oshawa Generals Head Coach and General Manager Chris DePiero and renamed the team the Majors.
The St. Michael’s Majors play a combination of league games, tournaments and exhibition games throughout Canada and the United States. The Majors offer a 50+ game schedule with over 75 on-ice practices. The team has a dedicated, year round dressing room and on premises fitness facility. Cutting edge player development in the areas of skating, individual skill development, team play, and mental skills training are all part of the program. The Majors also support and conduct full-year and off-season training programs, including weight training, fitness and yoga.
The Majors play out of the storied St. Michael's College School Arena at 1515 Bathurst Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. To date over 200 former St. Mike’s players have gone on to play in the NHL and 14 of those players have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
St. Michael's was founded in 1852 as an all-boys, Catholic school, owned and operated by the Basilian Fathers.
