Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
to all the Black Ice Hockey Teams and Coaches
2012 was another great Hockey season for Black Ice Hockey
With the AAA Midget team winning Gold in Lake Placid last Spring to all the other wins and loses we had through out the year. We had three Black Ice Hockey teams last spring and another two teams in the fall. Black Ice Hockey has grown into a true hockey organization. We had about 100 difeerent players on the 2012 Black Ice Hockey rosters. Players that are local right here in Vermont to players as far away as Rhode Island, New Hamshire, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and Canada. We added a bantam team in the spring and want to see this team grow into a competitive team during the spring and fall season.
Many thanks to all the players and parents for your dedication to Black Ice Hockey.
A special Thank You, to the sponsors of Black Ice Hockey
Utility Services Inc.
Querrey Industrial Services
Omya Inc.
Without sponsors like you the cost to play hockey would be hard to do each year.
I would like to thank the coaches and staff for the hard work plus time and money you give up every year without complaints.
Thank You

Black Ice Players and Families:
Greetings, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year from the Coaches of Black Ice Hockey! We hope that you all enjoy this time together with your families. We send our best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year to all of you.
By now the Black Ice players are all busy with your winter hockey schedule. We hope you are all playing hard and developing your skills. We know that when your schools play each other you’re looking for a win AND bragging rights. We have seen some of your games and will see many more before the winter hockey season ends.
2011 was a memorable year for many reasons. For the first time Black Ice expanded to play at two levels. The spring tournament season featured both A and AAA midget teams. In the fall we also featured two teams: one that played on Sundays and another team whose focus was on weekend tournament play. Another first was the addition of our first female player, Molly Smith, who quickly earned the respect of her teammates and coaches with her hardnosed play. Black Ice also had the first fundraiser to help pay defray player’s fees as well. We had our first annual golf tournament with the help of Black Ice Slusarczyk family who were gracious enough to host at their Valley View Golf Course in NY. Black Ice would also like to thank all the hole and team sponsors plus all the people who gave gifts that we were able to auction off during the golf tournament. A great time was had by all as past and present coaches, parents, and players participated for our favorite cause. (The details 2nd annual golf tournament for 2012 is not yet determined).
The spring AAA team had coaches Jim Prior and John Wing back for their eleventh year. In addition, coaches Rick Bussey, Chris Prior and Joal Prior were regulars on the bench. We even had Coach Brian Evans-Mongeon on occasion.
. The Spring Black Ice AAA midget team started out with a bang, winning the Gold medal in Concord NH. We then earned consecutive Silver finishes in Montreal and Plattsburg NY. In Lake Placid we were way down in the standings early but managed to make the Bronze Game. We won that game in triple overtime in one of the most exciting finishes in team history! We finished the season without a medal in the two Marlboro tournaments but every team we played left the ice knowing that they had played a good team regardless of the outcome.
Black Ice was fortunate to find Greg Dodge to be Head Coach of the Black Ice A midget team. He was assisted at various times by all of the AAA coaches as well. In addition coaches Ethan Abatiell, Mike Vincent, Mike Hickey, Matt Amstein, Bucky Godfrey and Ron Slusarczyk were a great help. The Spring Black Ice A team season was the inverse of the fortunes of the AAA team. We took some lumps in Berkshire Ma., in Montreal and Lake Placid NY. We played well but did not medal. We then carried on in Marlboro at the Minutemen Flames Tournament winning our final game for the bronze medal. What a game that was! In our final tournament in Marlboro, the Coca-Cola Tournament, we won all the way through the tournament only to be denied victory in the championship game. Still, by bringing home the Silver medal the A’s capped off the steady improvement that we showed under Greg all season.
The 2011 fall season was a first with two midget teams as well. As usual the tryouts were held at the same time we have the Black Ice Alumni game in August. (The 3rd annual alumni game will be held August 18, 2012). We played mostly Sunday games with a Black Ice A team and the Black Ice AA tournament team. Both teams started out slowly as we were very young this fall. The combined record of both teams was 11-19-2 but the majority of our losses came early in the season. The players improved each week as the fall progressed. The Silver medal in Lake Placid won by the AA midget team was just one of the highlights for the season.
As you know, the purpose of Black Ice Hockey is to have fun, meet new friends and give all the players a chance to play and improve at the game of hockey. We always played the best competition possible, win or lose. Black Ice always plays every player, regardless of the outcome on the scoreboard at the end of a game. With Black Ice you make the team, you play the game, and you stay a Black Ice player for life. The Coaches feel that the best part of the Black Ice is the family atmosphere that we have. We are very proud of our players and have made many friends with them and their families. We have seen families helping each other and us to make sure the players have the best possible experience. The team spirit is shared by all. The parents who invest the precious time and money in their hockey players that Black Ice requires are nothing short of top notch.
This year Jim has plans to make Black Ice even better. For the upcoming 2012 spring season we will plan on fielding a Bantam A plus team in addition to the A/AA and AA/AAA Midget teams. That means we are giving more opportunity for more hockey players to play Black Ice Hockey than in years past. With three levels of play we hope more players will be encouraged to participate. Even though Black Ice Hockey will a have tryout in the spring and fall for the three teams we always welcome additional players during the seasons when needed. Remember, Black Ice wants all players that love the game and want to play at a higher level of competition throughout New York, Canada and New England. For that reason we are, as we did last year, asking for you to let us know of any future Black Ice players we might miss out on.
As many of you know, most of the Black Ice players are from New York and the New England states. The high school season in Vermont is running longer now and finishing closer to our first tournament as it did last year. In addition we are not sure of the schedules in New York or the other New England states this year. Black Ice will hold two tryouts this spring on the first weekend in March. They will consist mostly of scrimmaging. The first will be Saturday March 3rd at Spartan Arena in Rutland, VT from 10:00 AM to 12:00 (noon) with a break for lunch and start again at 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The second will be Sunday March 4 at the Ice Center in Waterbury Vermont from 11:45 AM to 2:00 PM. As in past years, we expect many Vermont players whose teams are still in the playoffs may not be able to participate on those days as they will be preparing for the frozen four. If a new player can’t participate in the tryout scrimmage due to a Frozen Four commitment, we would like to know of your interest in Black Ice ASAP. We need those PLAYERS or parents to tell us if they plan on playing Black Ice so we can have evaluators watching their play during the frozen four or other games. Our tournaments for all three teams will be on the same weeks as last year, beginning on March 10th and end on either April 22nd or 29th.
The Black Ice coaches always go to as many high school games to look watch existing Black Ice players and evaluate any interested players for next season tryouts for placement on the team that they will best fit. For any new players it is crucial that they be there if possible when we hold our post high school season tryout scrimmages to be on the Black Ice roster for the spring season.
Black Ice has been lucky to have some team sponsors to help defray costs. Coach Brian Evans-Mongeon’s company Utility Services generously replaced the midget AAA uniform Jerseys and sox this year. We have been fortunate to have valued sponsors Omya Corp. and Querrey Industrial Services, who have donated to Black Ice for years, back again this year. We all know our hockey experience is expensive but hockey is a sport that we all love to watch and play. In the fall season the only fees that we have ever charged the players are for tryouts, tournament fees plus ice time and referees. And in the spring season are for tryouts and tournament fees. Money is also needed to replenish the supply of uniforms, medical kits, pucks, mouth guards, helmet parts for all the players, and other ongoing expenses. The coaches consider their compensation to be huge: we get friendship and the opportunity to work with great kids in a game we love, friendship with wonderful parents and families.
Thank You, Black Ice past and present parents and players for your help during the tryouts and other items we need done for the spring and fall season. A special thanks to Kelly and Brian Mallinson, Martha and Brian Evans-Mongeon, the Swartz family, Brendan and Patrick Collins, Bobby DeAngelis, Mark Gaudreau and many others that make this program work so well.
Finally, we are proud to announce that Chris Bussey has been named the Black Ice Director of Off Ice Operations. Chris has always been in charge of Black Ice cookouts at spring tournaments. She has now taken on the job as our webmaster. She can be seen at our games taking photos and collecting stats. She then spends countless hours adding to the website. The entire Black Ice history of the games are still a work in progress on the site, but the current AND former players can look up games, pictures, and stats from years ago because of her hard work. Our web address is:
Remember tryout information will also be listed on the website.
You can direct any questions about the program to Jim Prior at (802) 558-6088 or Email at Blackicehockey@comcast.net or Teaminfo@blackicehockeyteam.com
Once again, we wish the very best for you and your families in the coming year. We hope to see you and many of your friends very soon.
