8/26/20182018 Semi-Finals: Giants 7 - HC Phillies 6

2018 IBL/MSBL season is in the the books as the HC Phillies advance to the Semi-Finals for the 5th consecutive season in a row.  Recap of the final game is below....

HC Phillies 2018 season comes to an end with a 7-6 loss in the IBL MSBL Semifinals! Matt Pulley goes the distance yet again with a great outing pitching his heart out while Matthew Alspaugh and Chris Cole lead the way in offense with 2 Hits each.

It was a pitchers dual early until the Giants put up 3 R’s to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 4th Scott Kessler and Matt Pulley each drive the ball to the fence with RBI 2B’s to put the Phillies within 1. Jeremy Martin the...n rips an RBI 3B to the wall to tie the game up at 3.

The Giants answered right back by playing 3 R’s right back on the Phillies to go up 6-3 in the 5th. Jay Broughton comes in and pitches 4 shutout innings and Pulley matched with 3 shutout innings of his own. In the 9th the Giants add an insurance R on a Sac-Fly RBI that did not appear to be too significant at the time only extending the Giants lead to 7-3.

On the the 9th and the Phillies final chance to save their season. The Phillies show come to life and would not go down easy. After the Phillies bring a R across on a defensive miscue, Andrew Comp rips an RBI 1B to cut the lead to 7-5. Ben Kennedy follows and comes through with an RBI 1B to make it a 1 R game at 7-6. Kennedy represents the tying run at 1B. With Kennedy on 2B Chandler Farrow rips a line drive up the middle as Broughton somehow gets a glove on it and lobs the ball over to 1B to clinch the victory.

It was quite impressive to see the fight that the Phillies showed late in the game with their season on the line. No championship game or title this season but a very successful season nonetheless.

8/19/20182018 IBL Quarterfinals: HCP 6 - Cardinals 3

HC Phillies pull out a big win in the 2018 IBL Quarterfinals over the Indy Cardinals 6-3 on Sunday. Matt Pulley dominates with a CG on the mound and a big day at the plate. Clayton Jones ignites the Phillies offense while Scott Kessler and Chandler Farrow provide additional firepower!

A beautiful Sunday for some playoff baseball at one the premier facilities in the country Grand Park in Westfield. The #7 seed Indianapolis Cardinals come in 5-11 and 4-6 in their last ten games while the #2 seed HC Phillies come in at 11-5 with 4 victories in a row coming in. 2018 IBL Cy Young candidate Matt Pulley (5-1) takes the mound for the Phillies and gets the first batter before allowing a 1B by Dan Barr. Pulley recovers forcing a ground ball back to the mound flipping to SS Matthew Alspaugh who fires to 1B to complete the big 1st inning double play turning the Cards away in the 1st. Tim Heidelberger makes the start for the Cardinals and Matthew Alspaugh leads off the game with a 1B. The Cardinals return the favor turning a big double play of their own before turning the Phillies away in the bottom of the first. No score after 1.
Pulley settles in as he sits the Cardinals down in order in the 2nd finishing with a big K to turn the Cards away once again. Heidelberger was up for the challenge though returning the favor and sitting the Phillies down in order in the bottom half of the inning. No score after 2.
In the top of the 3rd the Cardinals get a bloop hit to RF taking a weird hope on RF Chris Cole as the runner advances to 2B. The next batter also 1B’s but the runner at 2B would have to hold at 3B. A ground ball to short brings the runner in as the Cardinals strike first taking a 1-0 lead. After another ground ball to SS Pulley picks up his 2nd K to end the 3rd for the Cardinals. Chandler Farrow stands in to leadoff the inning for the Phillies and drives the ball to deep CF over the head of the CF one hopping the wall. Farrow trots into second with a leadoff 2B. Stefan Welsh then takes a HBP as the Phillies have 2 on and none out looking to put together a big inning. Then the batter would ground out before a big K from Heidelberger changed the momentum big time. A fly ball to 3B ends the threat as the Phillies come up empty stranding 2 in the 3rd. A good sign of the Phillies offense warming up though.
On to the 4th as the Cards look to add to their slight lead with back to back 1B’s to put 2 on with no outs in the inning. Pulley settles down and gets back to back ground outs to respond right back. The Phillies D playing very week behind Pulley. Jeremy Martin ends the threat with a great catch in LF as the Cardinals strand 2 in the 4th. With one out Scott Kessler rips the ball to 3B and beats out the throw. Kessler then steals 2B before Matt Pulley helps his own cause driving the ball to deep LF with a chance to go the ball hits the top of the wall and comes back in as Kessler comes around to score and Pulley trots into 2B with an RBI 2B to tie the game up at 1. Clayton Jones comes on as the courtesy runner for Pulley and steals 3B on the first pitch. The ball gets away from the 3B and Jones comes in to score as the Phillies take a 2-1 lead. Starting over with the bases empty, Chris Cole walks before Jeremy Martin and Chandler Farrow 1B to load the bases. Stefan Welsh digs in and is hit by the pitch for the 2nd straight inning but this time with the bases loaded for an RBI as the Phillies go up 3-1. With 2 outs Tyler Hodson stands in as the best 10 hole hitter the IBL has ever seen. Hodson drives the ball hard to 2B and it gets through, One runs scores, two runs score as the Phillies go up 5-1. A huge 5 Run inning blows the game wide open for the Phillies in the 4th.
Matt Pulley works a perfect 5th inning on just 8 pitches as the Phillies keep their lead in tact. In the bottom of the inning the Phillies strand 2 runners after threatening to add to their lead.
On to the 6th as Pulley does it again making it 9 straight batters retired on a 6 pitch 6th inning. Chandler Farrow leads off the inning by reaching on a close play at 1B where the pitchers dropped the ball attempting to run over to 1B for the out. Farrow steals 2B before advancing to 3B on a wild pitch. Andrew Comp stands in and drives a base hit bring Farrow into to score. Comp comes through with an RBI 1B. Phillies now lead 6-1. Back to back outs end the inning for the Phillies.
In the 7th the Cardinals put together a rally. Scoring one R on a SAC-FLY RBI and another on an RBI 1B. After and error allows the next runner aboard Pulley gets a big ground out back to himself to cut the rally short. In the 7th the Phillies strand a runner as the lead remains 6-3.
On to the 8th as Pulley picks up a big strike out before forcing a ground out. Another big K turns the Cards away in order in the 8th. In the bottom of the 8th the Phillies go down in order taking a 3 R lead into the 9th.
The Phillies 3 puts away from advancing on to the semifinals. The Cardinals leadoff hitter gets aboard with a 1B. Pulley gets a huge strikeout for the first out before Andrew Comp makes an amazing fly ball catch in fouls territory on the 1B side. One out away as Pulley gets a ground ball to short and Matthew Alspaugh fields it firing to 1B for the out. Phillies Win! Phillies advance on to the semifinals!

8/5/2018HC Phillies 13 - Indy Bandits 6

HC PHILLIES TAKE REGULAR SEASON FINALE VICTORY OVER THE INDIANAPOLIS BANDITS 13-6 ON SUNDAY – AUGUST 5, 2018 @ BRUNETTE FIELD IN LAWRENCE (IN).

Tyler Hodson and Chandler Farrow lead the Phillies with big games on the mound and at the plate while Andrew Comp comes up big offensively to lead the Phillies to a victory in their RS finale.

AUGUST 8, 2018 @ BRUNETTE FIELD IN LAWRENCE (IN):  Tyler Hodson makes his first career start on the mound for the HC Phillies in their RS finale on Sunday versus the winless Indianapolis Bandits.  After allowing a leadoff 1B Hodson would settle in to put the Bandits down in order in the 1st.  In the bottom of the 1st the Phillies face a very rare 1-2-3 inning versus Bandits starter Aaron Liptow.  Hodson continues to cruise in the 2nd as he sits the Bandits down in order to return the favor.  Chris Cole comes up and leads off the 2nd inning with a base hit before stealing 2B.  Chandler Farrow rips the ball to RF bringing Cole in around 3rd to score as the Phillies strike first taking a 1-0 lead.  The Phillies would strand 2 runners in the inning.  In the top of the 3rd, Hodson continues to cruise as he sits down his 7th, 8th, and 9th consecutive batters in a row.  Hodson with 3 – 1 hit shutout innings in his first career start thus far.  Cheyne Reiter leads off the bottom of the 3rd with a perfectly placed bunt and then advances on a perfectly executed hit and run by Matthew Alspaugh putting the first two runners aboard for the Phillies.  Clayton Jones steps the plate and is able to drive to the ball to deep LF allowing Reiter to tag and score from 3rd as the Phillies take a 2-0 lead on Jones’ Sac-Fly RBI.

On to the 4th inning which seems to be the inning that always troubles the Phillies defensively as the Bandits put together a bit of a rally by plating 4 total R’s in the inning to double the Phillies up 4-2.  Hodson settles down though to pick up a big K and then would force a groundout to 2B to get out of the inning.  Chandler Farrow comes through with a one out 1B in the bottom of the 4th and then would steal 2B to advance into scoring position.  With two outs, Andrew Comp comes to the plate and drives the ball into the right centerfield gap bringing in Farrow to cut the Bandits lead to 4-3.  Frank Cole stands in and drive a line drive to LF bringing Comp around to score as the Phillies tie the game up at 4.  Cheyne Reiter and Matthew Alspaugh draw back to back BB’s to load the bases with two outs.  Clayton Jones stands in and is hit by the pitch allowing Frank Cole to score as the Phillies retake the lead 5-4.  Cheyne Reiter advances home to score on a wild pitch as the Phillies match the Bandits in the inning by scoring their 4th R of the inning.  With a new 6-4 lead Hodson settles in to pick up two big outs with 2 runners aboard before Scott Kessler guns down a would be base stealer attempting to steal 3rd to turn the Bandits away in the 5th.  Chris Cole and Jeremy Martin come through with back to back 1B’s to lead off the 5th inning for the Phillies.  Chandler Farrow does it again ripping another line drive base hit to bring in Cole.  Tyler Hodson draws a BB to load the bases for Andrew Comp.  Comp steps up and drives the ball deep to the wall in CF as both Jeremy Martin and Chandler Farrow come in to score as the Phillies blow the game wide open at 9-4.  Matthew Alspaugh adds to the lead by driving the ball down the RF line bringing in Tyler Hodson and Cheyne Reiter as the Phillies increase their lead to 11-4.  5 R’s in the inning for the Phillies.  Hodson comes out for the 6th inning and finishes his first career start very strong by sitting the Bandits down in order for the 3rd time in the game.  Hodson finishes with his 6th K of the game.  Phillies lead 11-4 after 6.

Chandler Farrow takes over in relief for the Phillies and after allowing a leadoff BB would strike out the next batter before forcing and completing a huge 1-6-3 double play to turn the Bandits away in the 7th.  Tyler Hodson would continue his big game by coming through with a 1 out 1B in the 7th.  Cheyne Reiter stands in with an RBI opportunity and comes through yet again ripping a base hit bringing Hodson around to score as the Phillies increase their lead to 8 R’s.  Sean Burton rips a base hit to load the bases up with 2 outs in the inning.  Matt Longfellow stands in and just misses a big hit down the 3B line before working the count to draw an RBI BB scoring Frank Cole from 3B.  The Phillies would leave the bases loaded from there to end the 7th.  After getting their first two batters aboard in the 8th, Farrow would force back to back outs.  With 2 outs the Bandits get a big bloop base hit good enough to bring in 2 R’s as the Bandits cut the Phillies lead to 13-6.  Farrow forces the next batter to fly out to Reiter at 2B.  Clayton Jones leads off the 8th with a 1B and then steals 2B but the Phillies would go down in order after that to be turned away in the inning.  Farrow comes out for the 9th to nail down the win for the Phillies and get the first batter to ground out back to himself at the mound.  Farrow then forces back to back ground balls to SS Matthew Alspaugh who made the plays look routine as the Phillies clinch the victory over the Bandits in their RS Finale!  PHILLIES WIN!!

7/29/2018HC Phillies sweep Indy Monarchs

HC PHILLIES PULL OFF DH SWEEP OF THE INDIANAPOLIS MONARCHS ON SUNDAY, 7/29 AT BADGER PARK – O’MALIA STADIUM IN CARMEL (IN).

GAME #1 – 7.29.18 @ BADGER PARK – O’MALIA STADIUM IN CARMEL (IN).

ERIC TEALL COMES THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH WITH A GO AHEAD 3-RUN HOME RUN TO PUT THE PHILLIES ON TOP BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN THE MONARCHS IN THE FINAL INNING TO CLINCH THE VICTORY 9-8.

Ben Kennedy makes the start on the mound for the Phillies in game #1 of the final twin bill of the 2018 IBL season.  After retiring the first batter, the Monarchs would strike 1st by bringing a R across to take a 1-0 lead in the 1st.  Kennedy settles down to get the next two batters to get out of the inning.  Red hot Clayton Jones steps in and picks up right where he left off by placing the ball to deep LF over the fielders head and to the wall for a leadoff 2B.  Chandler Farrow batting in the 2 hole rips a line drive to the right side allowing Jones to score as the Phillies tie it up 1-1.  Scott Kessler singles and Matt Pulley draws a BB to load the bases.  Chris Cole steps up and rips a line drive to the left side as Farrow and Kessler both score to put the Phillies on top for the first time 3-1.  Eric Tealls then drives the ball to deep left as Pulley tags and scores to make it 4-1 Phillies after 1.

In the top of the 2nd a couple of defensive miscues would set the table for the Monarchs to put together a big rally that was capped with a 3 RBI HR by 2017 All-Star Andrew McAuley.  Altogether the Monarchs plate 6 R’s in the 2nd inning to take a commanding 7-4 lead.  In the bottom of the 2nd the Phillies would come up empty stranding a runner to keep the deficit at 3 R’s.  In the top of the 3rd the Monarchs would get 2 runners aboard before Kennedy picks up a big K to end the inning.  Scott Kessler and Matt Pulley each hit back to back 1B’s to lead off the 3rd inning for the Phillies.  A called balk would allow Kessler to score and Pulley to advance to 2B cutting the Monarchs lead to 7-5.

Neither team was able to do any damage in the 4th inning as both starters pitched scoreless innings.  Veteran Eric Teall comes on in relief for the Phillies in the 5th and the lead off runner would get aboard for the Monarchs.  Teall clearly made a quick move and picked the runner off at 1B but the umpire did not call the out allowing the runner to remain on 1B.  After the Monarchs bring across a R to increase their lead to 8-5, Teall strikes out the side.  Scott Kessler and Matt Pulley do it again with back to back 1B’s in the 5th but this time with 1 out in the inning.  Jeremy Martin comes through with an RBI 1B scoring Kessler to cut the lead to 8-6.  Eric Teall digs in with a  chance to help his own cause and with a 2-0 count Teall connects driving the ball to deep left center and GONE!!!!!  A clutch go ahead 3 RBI Home Run for Teall puts the Phillies on top 9-8 just like that with one swing of the bat.  An instant classic moment in Phillies history!

Teall continues to dominant as he strikes out the side again in the 6th to turn the Monarchs away.  The Phillies would strand 2 runners in the bottom of the 6th to keep their lead at just 1.  In the top of the 7th, Teall picks up his 7th straight K for the first out.  The next batter hits a 1 out 1B but then attempts to steal 2B.  Matt Pulley throws a laser beam with pinpoint accuracy to nail the runner dead in his tracks.  With the bases clear, Teall fires the full count pitch past the batter to clinch the Phillies victory!  PHILLIES WIN!

DH GAME # 2.

**MATT PULLEY AND SCOTT KESSLER LEAD THE HC PHILLIES TO A BIG 9-4 VICTORY OVER THE INDIANAPOLIS MONARCHS IN GAME 2 WITH BIG DAYS AT THE PLATE AND ON THE MOUND.

Clayton Jones picks up right where he left off in game 1 by leading off game 2 with line drive 2B to left center field.  Scott Kessler reaches on a 1B to put runners on the corners with 1 out.  Chris Cole comes through with another huge 2-RBI 1B just like he did in the 1st inning of game 1 to put the Phillies up early 2-0.  Matt Pulley makes the start on the mound and starts the game off with a big K.  A couple of defensive miscues at 3B allowed 2 runners to get aboard but Pulley overcomes by getting back to back outs.  Neither team scores in the 2nd as the Phillies strand 1 and Pulley sits the Monarchs down in order in the bottom half.  Clayton Jones continues to be locked in as picks up another 2B to lead off the 3rd, his 3rd 2B of the 2 game twin bill.  Matt Pulley brings Jones in with a line drive 1B to RF as the Phillies go on top 3-0.  The Monarchs answer back capitalizing on more defensive miscues plating 2 R’s in the 3rd to cut the Phillies lead to 3-2.

In the top of the 4th, Eric Teall and Tyler Hodson each hit back to back 1B’s before Andrew Comp hits a 1B of his own to score Teall and put the Phillies up 4-2.  Clayton Jones is productive even when he does not get a hit as Jones grounds out to SS but Hodson is able to score to make it 5-2 Phillies.  Chandler Farrow adds to the fun with an RBI 1B of his own scoring Comp as the Phillies pull away in the 4th now up 6-2.  After an E the Monarchs capitalize again bringing a R across in the bottom half to make it a 6-3 ball game.  After the Phillies come up empty in the top half, the Monarchs add another R in the bottom of the 5th as they chip away at the Phillies lead now down 6-4.

In the top of the 6th, Clayton Jones draws a 1 out BB and then steals 2B before advancing to 3B on a deep fly ball to CF by Chandler Farrow.  Scott Kessler rips an RBI 1B to remain perfect on the game and to increase the Phillies lead to 7-4.  Matt Pulley stands in and absolutely crushes the first pitch he sees driving the ball deep into the trees beyond the RF wall for a big 2-RBI Home Run as the Phillies really pull away up now 9-4.  In the bottom of the 6th the Monarchs get 1 runner aboard before being turned away by Pulley with back to back ground outs.  Nothing doing for the Phillies in the top of the 7th and after sitting down the first two batters Pulley gets a ground ball to 1B stabbed by Andrew Comp who takes it himself for final out clinching the Phillies victory.  PHILLIES WIN!!

MSBL ‘Player of the Week’: Clayton Jones, HC Phillies, Indiana Baseball League

Submitted by Matt Longfellow, Hamilton County Phillies manager

Clayton Jones is the center fielder for the Hamilton County Phillies from the MSBL’s Indiana Baseball League located in and around Indianapolis. It all began on June 24, 2018 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville, IN.  HC Phillies center fielder and Trine University baseball alum Clayton Jones put up an amazing 4 for 4 performance against the Indy Rangers while bringing in one RBI and adding three stolen bases in a single game.  Clayton is one of the first Phillies players in 2018 to have a perfect day at the plate after hitting four singles on all four at bats against the Rangers.

Just one week later on July 1, 2018 at Scecina Memorial HS in Indy, Clayton continued his perfect run into the next game.  Against the Indianapolis Cardinals Clayton extended his hit streak to five straight at bats, then six, then seven and then on to 10 consecutive at bats with a base hit.  Back to back games with a perfect day at the plate.  Not something you see every day for sure.  Clayton went 6 for 6 with six singles, two runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases in the HC Phillies 15-6 victory over the Indianapolis Cardinals.  That is a perfect 10 for 10 in two full games played.

Another week later the Phillies returned to Mt. Vernon high school as Jones stepped in for his first at bat versus the Indianapolis Pirates in the bottom of the first inning.  Jones ripped a base hit to the right side and reached safely for his 11th consecutive at bat with a base hit.  A couple of innings later, Clayton ripped a line drive that was snagged by a Pirates defender to finally bring the streak to end.  Clayton went on to go 2 for 2 the rest of the game just missing extending his streak to 14 at bats.  Clayton went 3 for 4 with three singles, two runs scored and three stolen bases for the Phillies versus the Pirates.

This was an amazing feat performed by Clayton Jones with 11 straight at bats with a base hit and a 13 for 14 run at the plate over a three game span.  Simply amazing and one for the record books!
