JULY 22, 2018 – DH GAME #2 - @ INDY HOWL (BISHOP CHATARD HS)

HC PHILLIES ANSWER BACK FOR A BIG VICTORY IN GAME #2 VERSUS THE INDY HOWL AS BEN KENNEDY AND SCOTT KESSLER LEAD THE WAY FOR THE PHILLIES ON THE MOUND.  SCOTT KESSLER AND KYLE HUTTON COME UP BIG FOR THE PHILLIES AT THE PLATE.

On a wet day in Indy the clouds would move through and the rain would let up just in time to get game #2 under way.  In the top the 1st the Phillies would threaten to strike first but would come up empty.   Ben Kennedy makes the start on the mound for the Phillies and after giving up a leadoff HR would settle down to get the Howl in order.  In the top of the 2nd, Kyle Hutton rips a base hit and steals 2B.  Matt Longfellow comes through with a ground ball to SS that allows Hutton to score from 3rd to tie the game up at 1.  Kennedy sits the Howl down in order in the 2nd.  In the top of the 3rd the Phillies with the bases loaded as Matt Longfellow hits a ground ball to 3B allowing one run to score and Longfellow beats the throw the 1B and another run advances in from 3B during the throw as the Phillies go up 3-1.  Two pitches later Longfellow steals 2B and Kyle Hutton takes off from 3B to score at home.  The Phillies add another R as Clayton Jones gets aboard and steals 2B before being brought in on the RBI 1B by Scott Kessler.  Kennedy puts together another scoreless inning on the mound as the Phillies lead 5-1 after 3.

In the top of the 4th Kyle Hutton comes through with an RBI 1B and two more R’s would come across to score in the inning as the Phillies jump on top 8-1.  Matthew Alspaugh and Clayton Jones both scoring R’s.  The rain continued to come down and began to pickup shortly the Howl respond with a 2 R HR in the bottom of the 4th to cut the lead to 8-3.  It was near pouring rain in the 5th inning as the Phillies load the bases but do not bring anyone in after a close call at 3B.  In the bottom of the 5th Ben Kennedy comes through after 2 Howl batters get aboard in the inning.  The score remains 8-3 after 5.  In the top of the 6th the Phillies would get a runner aboard before going down in order.  The Howl began to rally in the 6th bringing 2 R’s across first before another scores on a pitch that gets by at home plate.  With the lead cut down to 8-6 the Howl had 2 runners aboard when Scott Kessler comes in and gets a big ground ball to 3B to keep the Phillies on top.

On to the final inning as the Phillies attempt to get some of the R’s back that were lost in the previous innings.  The Phillies would strand two runners in the inning coming up empty and taking a 2 run lead into the final ½ inning.  3 outs away as Scott Kessler gets the first batter to fly out to Jeremy Martin in LF.  Kessler then comes up with an 8 pitch battle strikeout versus a very good hitter for a huge 2nd out.  1 out away from the victory, Kessler gets a ground ball to short as Matthew Alspaugh first to 1B in time for the final out and to clinch a big Phillies victory.  Phillies Win!  HC PHILLIES  8  - INDY HOWL 6.

7/22/2018Indy Howl 12 - HC Phillies 2

HC PHILLIES COME UP SHORT IN GAME #1 VERSUS THE INDY HOWL.

Matt Longfellow makes his first start of the season on the mound and turns the Howl away in the 1st inning.  David Early answers with a scoreless inning of his own in the bottom half.  Longfellow would struggle in the 2nd allowing back to back BB’s before the Howl add back to back to hits to strike first.  Early keeps the Phillies off the board again in the 2nd.  In the top of the 3rd, Longfellow would strike out the side to turn the Howl away in the 3rd.  Clayton Jones gets aboard in the 3rd and steals 2B.  Stefan Welsh drives Jones in with an RBI 1B as the Phillies get on the board.  Matt Longfellow exits after 2 batters in the 4th as Andrew Comp comes in to pitch.  Comp would turn the ball over to Pat Morgan in the 6th before heavy rain called the game after 6 innings.  Phillies come up short in game 1 to drop to 7-5 on the year.

7/15/2018HC Phillies 2 - Indy Giants 7 (DH Gm 1)

HC PHILLIES SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER VERSUS THE INDIANAPOLIS GIANTS AT MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL.  MATT PULLEY LEADS THE WAY ON OFFENSE IN GAME 1 AND PITCHES 5 DOMINANT INNINGS IN GAME 2.

DH GAME #1:  HC PHILLIES SUFFER 7-2 LOSS TO THE INDY GIANTS AFTER SINGLE BAD 4TH INNING PUTS THE GIANTS AHEAD FOR GOOD.

GAME #1 @ Mt. Vernon HS – Fortville (7/15/18):  Chris Cole makes his 2nd start of the season on the mound for the Phillies versus the rival Indianapolis Giants in game 1 of a twin bill rematch of the last two IBL MSBL Championship games.  Eli Linder starts the game for the Giants and Chris Cole draws a 2 out BB in the 1st inning to give the Phillies their first base runner of the game.  Matt Pulley stands in and drive the ball to the right centerfield gap to bring in Cole from 2B as the Phillies strike first in the 1st.  In the bottom of the 1st the Giants would get a runner aboard with one out but a ground ball to Matt Longfellow at 3B begins and inning ending double play turned by 2B Tyler Hodson as the Phillies turn the Giants away in the first.

Linder would settle in to turn the Phillies away in the 2nd.  In the bottom of the 2nd an error at 3B allows the Giants to get two runners aboard.  A couple of batters later the Giants capitalize on the error by tying the game up at 1.  The Phillies were unable to answer back in the top of the 3rd but the Giants bring a R across in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the game at 2-1.

Chris Cole gets aboard in the 4th and Matt Pulley nails the right field wall just short of a HR as the Phillies threaten in the inning.  With the bases loaded Stefan Welsh draws an RBI BB as the Phillies tie the game back up at 2.  In the bottom of the inning Cole strikes out the first batter but the Giants would load the bases after that.  Back to back BB’s allow the Giants to go on top 4-2 with just 1 out in the inning.  Tyler Hodson comes out in relief and the Giants add 3 more R’s in the inning to blow the game open at 7-2.

Nothing doing for the Phillies in the 5th nor 6th innings.  Hodson pitches very well though in both innings keeping the Giants off the board after settling in on the mound.  In the top of the 7th the Phillies threatened with the bases loaded but a game killing double play turned by the Giants would end the game.  FINAL SCORE:  HC Phillies  2  -  Indy Giants 7.

OFFENSIVE PERFORMERS

STEFAN WELSH:  2-BB & RBI.

7/15/2018Indy Giants 4 - HC Phillies 6 (DH Gm 2)

DH GAME #2:  MATT PULLEY DOMINATES ON THE MOUND TO LEAD THE HC PHILLIES TO A 6-4 VICTORY OVER THE INDIANAPOLIS GIANTS IN GAME 2 OF A TWIN BILL AT MT. VERNON HS IN FORTVILLE.

GAME #2 @ MT. VERNON HS – FORTVILLE (7/15/18):  Matt Pulley makes the start on the mound for the Phillies versus the high powered Giants and in game #2.  Pulley comes out ready turning the Giants away in the 1st.  Clint Seefeldt makes the start for the Giants and matches Pulley with a scoreless 1st inning of his own.  A big double play in the 2nd turns the Giants away again keeping the game scoreless.  Cheyne Reiter comes up for the Phillies in his IBL debut and leads off the 2nd inning with a 1B.  After advancing Reiter would come in to score to put the Phillies on the board 1st at 1-0.  In the top of the 3rd Matt Pulley appears to have struck the batter out not once but twice but both pitches were called balls to extend the inning.  The Giants capitalize with a big 3rd inning brining 3 R’s across to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the game.  In the bottom of the 3rd the Phillies could not answer back to remain down by 2 R’s after 3.

Pulley responds with a perfect 4th inning to keep the game close at 3-1.  In the bottom of the 4th Tyler Hodson and Stefan Welsh would each draw BB’s and would each advance after a WP on the mound.  Andrew Comp comes up huge for the Phillies blasting a line drive to right center field scoring both Hodson and Welsh.  Just like that the game is tied at 3.  The Phillies weren’t done though as Comp scores on a wild pitch to give the Phillies the 4-3 lead.  Clayton Jones comes up with a big 1B and steals 2B.  Jones advances to 3rd  and would come in to score on Jeremy Martin’s RBI BB with the bases loaded.  Martin battled Jay Broughton for 7 pitches and drew the walk on pitch 8.  Phillies take a 5-3 lead.

Moving on the 5th, the Phillies attempt to hold on to their lead after a 4 - R 4th inning.  Matt Pulley battles on the mound as the Giants get runners aboard that advance to 2nd and 3rd.  With two outs in the inning Pulley battles working a full count in a 9 pitch at bat after 4 straight foul balls were hit by the batter.  On the 10th pitch of the at bat, Pulley paints the inside corner for a called strike 3 to turn the Giants away.  A huge pitch!  In the bottom of the 5th the Phillies would go down in order to keep the game at 5-3.

Ben Kennedy comes on in relief for the Phillies and allows a lead off 2B in the top of the 6th inning.  Kennedy battles back though to get the next 3 batters to ground out and fly out to turn the Giants away once again.  In the bottom of the 6th, Clayton Jones gets aboard again and once again steals 2B.  After Jones advances to 3B after Matt Pulley is intentionally walked for the 2nd time in the game.  Jeremy Martin stands in and works the count full before hitting the ball hard to 3B side.  The Giants 3B was able to stop the ball but was too far back to attempt any throw as all runners are safe and Jones scores from 3B.  The Phillies get an insurance R taking a 6-3 lead into the final inning.

In the 7th, Eli Linder leads off the inning with a 1B and Scott Yanney draws a BB to bring the tying run to the plate.  Jay Broughton comes through with an RBI 1B cutting the Phillies lead to 6-4.  Kennedy settles down to pick up a big out but would BB the next batter to load the bases.  A dramatic finish as whose day would it be, Ben Kennedy’s or Matt Tyner’s at the plate for the Giants?  Kennedy gets Tyner to ground the ball to SS, Matthew Alspaugh gloves it, flips to 2B, Tyler Hodson makes the turn to 1B and just in time!  Double play ends the ball game!  Phillies Win!  FINAL SCORE:  INDY GIANTS 4 – HC PHILLIES 6

7/8/2018Indy Pirates 6 - HC Phillies 5 (10 Innings)

HC PHILLIES LOSE A CLOSE ONE IN 10 INNINGS TO THE INDIANAPOLIS PIRATES 6-5.  CHANDLER FARROW PUTS UP A GREAT PERFORMANCE ON THE MOUND WHILE CHRIS COLE AND CLAYTON JONES PACE THE PHILLIES ON OFFENSE WITH 3 HITS EACH.

MT. VERNON HS – JULY 8, 2018:  Chandler Farrow makes his first start of the season on the mound for the Phillies against the Indy Pirates and after loading the bases in the first inning gets a huge double play ball to turn the Pirates away in the 1st.  Each team would score in the 2nd inning as Clayton Jones extends his hit streak to 11 straight at bats with a base hit by getting aboard in the 1st.  Jones would steal 2B & 3B before scoring from 3rd to tie the game up at 1 in the 2nd.  Both pitchers pitch a scoreless 3rd to keep the game tied.

In the 4th, the Pirates would threaten but another double play ball would turn them away.  Chandler Farrow helps his own cause with an RBI 1B to put the Phillies up 2-1.  Stefan Welsh, Andrew Comp, and Pat Morgan would all three 1B as the Phillies plate two more R’s to increase their lead to 4-1 after a 3 R 4th inning.  In the 5th the Pirates would score an unearned R to cut the lead in half at 4-2.  In the bottom of the 6th Chris Cole would 2B and would come around to score to put the Phillies up 5-2 after 6.

In the top of the 7th the Pirates would get 2 runners aboard after an error by the Phillies at 3B.  Ben Kennedy comes on in relief but the Pirates put together a rally scoring 3 big R’s in the 7th to tie the game up at 5.  Both teams threatened in the 9th and the Phillies had a runner on 3B in the 8th and 9th innings but could not bring the runner across.  Extra innings we go tied at 5.

In the top of the 10th the Pirates start with a runner at 2nd and 1 out using the California rule.  Kennedy picks up a huge K for the 2nd out.  Just two pitches later the runner at 2B takes off stealing 3B and is safe due to an error by the Phillies.  The runner nearly gets gunned down at home but scores in time.  Pirates lead 6-5.  In the bottom of the 10th Chris Cole hits a rocket to SS that was stopped and Scott Kessler was gunned down at 3B.  Down to their final out the Phillies can’t move Chris Cole around as the Pirates hang on for the 6-5 win in 10 innings.

7/1/2018HC Phillies 15 - Indy Cardinals 6

HC PHILLIES DEFEAT THE INDIANAPOLIS CARDINALS 15-6 BEHIND HUGE 3RD INNING, BIG PERFORMANCE AT THE PLATE FROM CLAYTON JONES, AND DOMINANT PITCHING BY BEN KENNEDY IN HIS 1ST CAREER IBL START.

SCECINA MEMORIAL HS – INDIANAPOLIS (7/1/18):  HC Phillies matched up versus the Indianapolis Cardinals for the 2nd and final time in the 2018 IBL MSBL regular season.  Coming out hot the Phillies waste no time at the start of this game as Clayton Jones rips a leadoff single for his 5th hit in a row coming off of a 4-4 performance the week prior.  Also red hot on the season is Scott Kessler as Kessler draws a BB to put the first two runners aboard.  Matt Pulley comes up with one out and works a full count before driving the ball to deep CF one hopping the wall to score both Jones and Kessler.  Phillies go up 2-0 on Pulley’s 2-RBI 2B.  Stefan Welsh steps in with 2 outs and drives the ball to deep CF over the head of the fielder to score Pulley from 2nd.  The Phillies plate 3 R’s in the top of the 1st inning.  Benjamin Kennedy out of Eastern Illinois University makes his first career IBL start for the Phillies on the mound.  The Cardinals answer right back by not only tying the game up but adding another R to take a 4-3 lead after 1 inning.  A shaky start for Kennedy and the Phillies defense.

In the top of the 2nd inning the Phillies would strand 2 runners after Frank Cole draws a lead off BB and Clayton Jones extends his hit streak to 6 consecutive at bats with a base hit.  In the bottom half of the inning Kennedy settles down after allowing the leadoff hitter to get aboard with 2 big K’s in the inning.  Cardinals lead 4-3 after 2.

In the 3rd the Phillies break the game wide open with a record inning.  Chris Cole leads off the inning with a 2B and Matt Pulley drives another ball deep to the wall for an RBI 2B scoring Cole to tie the game up at 4.  Jeremy Martin and Stefan Welsh draw back to back BB’s to load the bases with no outs.  Andrew Comp gives the Phillies the lead with an RBI 1B scoring Pulley and all runners advance.  On the play a base running error leads to a run down at 3B but Jeremy Martin decides to shoot for home plate and makes it on an errant throw as Welsh and Comp both come around to score as well.  Three more R’s come in as the Phillies double up the Cardinals 8-4.  Frank Cole, Sean Burton, and Matt Longfellow come through with back to back to back 1B’s to reload the bases once again.  Clayton Jones does it again with an RBI 1B scoring Frank Cole extending his hit streak to 7 consecutive at bats with a base hit.  Scott Kessler comes through once again with an RBI 1B scoring Sean Burton as the 7th R comes across the plate in the inning for the Phillies.  Chris Cole and Matt Pulley then draw back to back RBI BB’s scoring Matt Longfellow and Clayton Jones increasing the run count to 9 total R’s on the inning.  Jeremy Martin walked his first time up in the inning and comes through with a big 2-RBI 1B scoring Scott Kessler and Chris Cole (2nd R of the inning) as the Phillies plate 11 total R’s in the inning to break the game wide open with a 14-4 lead.  A record inning for the Phillies as all 10 batters in the lineup not only reach base but also score at least 1 R as well.  With a comfortable lead Ben Kennedy picks up back to back K’s and a pop fly to himself for a perfect 3rd inning on the mound.  Phillies lead 14-4 after 3 innings.

Each team to would step up on defense for the next 3 innings as neither team would score in the 4th, 5th, nor 6th innings.  Clayton Jones picks up his 8th consecutive base hit in the top of the 4th inning but was stranded on the base paths at 3B.  Continuing to cruise, Ben Kennedy would strike out the side in the bottom of the 6th inning for his 5th consecutive scoreless inning.

After the Phillies came up empty in the top of the 7th a couple of defensive errors would lead to the Cardinals bringing in 2 R’s in the bottom of the 7th inning to cut the Phillies lead back down to single digits at 14-6.  Sean Burton steps up to lead off the 8th inning with a 1B to RF as the Phillies have their leadoff man aboard for the 3rd consecutive inning.  Clayton Jones extended his hit streak to 9 consecutive at bats with a base hit in the 6th inning and stands in with 1 out in the 8th.  Jones rips the ball down the 3B line for another base hit, his 10th consecutive at bat with a base hit.  An amazing 6 for 6 performance at the plate.  Scott Kessler then crushes the ball off the left center field wall as Sean Burton comes around to score.  After that the game would be called with Chris Cole at the plate in the top of the 8thPhillies Win 15-6!  HC PHILLIES 15 – INDY CARDINALS 6

6/24/2018HC Phillies 7 - Indy Rangers 8

HC PHILLIES COME UP SHORT VERSUS THE INDY RANGERS ON SUNDAY AT MT. VERNON HS IN FORTVILLE.  A GREAT GAME THAT CAME DOWN TO THE FINAL PITCH TO DECIDE THE VICTOR.  CHRIS COLE PITCHES AN ABSOLUTE GEM GOING 8.1 IP WITH 5 CONSECUTIVE SHUTOUT INNINGS FROM THE 3RD THROUGH THE 7TH.  CLAYTON JONES AND SCOTT KESSLER STEP UP WITH BIG DAYS AT THE PLATE TO KEEP THE PHILLIES IN THE GAME UNTIL THE END.

MT VERNON HS – FORTVILLE (IN):  Two veteran IBL teams matching up for the 2nd and final time this season as the Indy Rangers square off against the Hamilton County Phillies.  Chris Cole makes his first start of the season on the mound for the Phillies versus a high powered Rangers offense known for being one of the better hitting teams in the IBL.  It was a rocky start for Cole and the Phillies defense as multiple defensive miscues allow the Rangers to plate 3 R’s in the 1st inning alone.  In the bottom of the inning Scott Kessler rips and RBI 2B to bring in Matthew Alspaugh to cut the Rangers lead to 3-1.

In the top of the 3rd, the Rangers bring across two more runs to go on top 5-1.  Matthew Alspaugh comes up with an RBI 1B scoring Andrew Comp to cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the 3rd.  Neither team would score in the 4th or 5th innings.  Chris Cole comes up with his 3rd straight scoreless inning in the top of the 6th.  In the bottom of the 6th Scott Kessler rips an RBI 1B scoring Alspaugh again and Chris Cole adds a SAC-FLY RBI scoring Kessler.  Jeremy Martin adds and RBI 1B scoring Matt Pulley as the Phillies come from behind to tie the game up at 5.

Chris Cole continues his great outing with his 4th consecutive scoreless inning in the top of the 7th.  In the bottom of the 7th, Cole helps his own cause with a SAC-FLY RBI, his 2nd of the game, to give the Phillies their first lead of the game at 6-5.  In the top of the 8th, the Rangers would bring across the tying run on a SAC-FLY RBI of their own to knot the game up at 6.  In the top of the 9th Matt Pulley comes in and picks up a huge out before Rangers veteran C Gino DeAnda comes through with a bloop hit to RF allowing not one but 2 R’s to score to make the game 8-6.  In the bottom of the 8th, Clayton Jones comes through to tie the game right back up with an RBI 1B.  Jones then steals 2B, and steals 3B.  With just 1 out the Phillies could not bring Jones in as Scott Kessler’s line drive was hit too hard to tag up on and Chris Cole’s line drive up the middle was somehow snagged by the P to end the game.

OFFENSIVE PERFORMERS

CLAYTON JONES:  4-4 w/ 4-1B, RBI, & 3-SB
