The Hamilton County Phillies play in the tough 25-over National division of the Indiana Baseball League. They are starting to make some waves and rebound from a slow start and have just posted two in a row to climb up to 3-5 in the league. Here is a recap of their past two games, as provided by manager Matt Longfellow.
On Sunday, June 25th Eric Teall threw a complete game for the win while striking out 12. Eric also went 2-4 with two singles, a run scored and an RBI in the HC Phillies victory of theIndianapolis Pirates by a score of 9-8. Scott Kessler also added two hits and two runs scored along with being hit by a pitch and drawing a walk.
In our July 2nd game Matt Pulley also threw a complete game with eight strikeouts in our 14-11 victory over the Rangers. Matt was 4-5 at the plate with two singles, two home runs, three runs scored and an amazing six RBI! Chris Cole chipped in with a 4-5 day that included two singles, a double, a triple and two runs scored. He also knocked in four. Matt Alspaugh added a 3-4 day and Scott Kessler was 3-5 with three runs scored to add to the complete team victory.

HC PHILLIES DEFEAT THE INDIANAPOLIS PIRATES ON SUNDAY, 6/25 BY A SCORE OF 9-8 @ NEW PALESTINE HS STADIUM IN NEW PALESTINE, IN.!
Eric Teall goes the distance on the mound picking up the W w/ 12 K's while going 2-4 w/ 2-1B, R, & RBI at the plate for the Phillies on Sunday. Scott Kessler would lead the way at the plate going 2-2 w/ BB, HBP, 2-1B's, & 2-R's scored.
GAME RECAP: After jumping on top of the Pirates 4-0 in the top of the 1st, the Pirates would come from behind take the lead 5-4 while playing solid defense in the 2nd and 3rd innings. In the 4th the Pirates would increase their lead to 7-4. The Phillies would fight back scoring 1 R in the 4th and 3 R's in the 5th to retake the lead over the Pirates 8-7. In the bottom the of the 6th the Pirates would fight right back tieing the game up at 8 all. This great see-saw battle would continue as the Phillies would bring across the go ahead R w/ 2 outs in the top of the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 7th, the Pirates would put the tying R aboard before Eric Teall would come up with a big strike out to end the Pirates threat, sealing the Phillies victory. **Final score: HC Phillies 9 - Indy Pirates 8.

HC Phillies pick up there first win of the season defeating the Indy Rangers 6-2 on Sunday at Scecina Memorial HS in Indianapolis! Scott Kessler puts together a true iron man performance going 9 innings strong on the mound to pick the W and CG, w/ 7 K's while also adding a 2B, 2 R's, 2 BB, 2 SB, and an RBI at the plate. Matt Zmich and Tom Drake both put up perfect days at the plate to lead the Phillies offense. Zmich goes 4 for 4 w/ a R, SB, 2 2B's, and 3 RBI. Drake goes 3 for 3 w/ a BB and an RBI. Clayton Jones added 2 H's w/ 2 R's, a SAC, and 2 SB for the Phillies as well. An all around fantastic team victory!

August 21, 2016 (Week 16): HC Phillies defeat the Indianapolis Bandits 9-3 in the 2016 IBL Playoffs - Quarterfinals at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.
08/21/16: Eric Teall took the mound for the Phillies going 6 strong innings holding the Bandits at bay. HCP scored in each of the first 5 innings and slowly continued to pile on the hits and runs building a 9-3 advantage after 6 innings. Scott Kessler came on to pitch 3 scoreless innings to finish off the Bandits in the late innings. HCP pulled away for good on back to back RBI 3B's from Kessler and Chris Cole. This was HCP's third consecutive IBL quarterfinal playoff victory advancing on the IBL semi-finals for the third consecutive year as well.
POWER ALLEY PERFORMERS OF THE GAME: Scott Kessler goes 3-4 w/ R, 3B, 2-RBI, and SB while throwing 3.0 shutout innings on the mound to seal the victory. Eric Teall went 2-4 w/ R, 2B, and RBI while going 6.0 strong innings on the mound holding the Bandits at bay. Ben Stenger goes 3-4 w/ 2B, RBI, and SB. Matthew Alspaugh goes 2-3 w/ 2R, 2B, BB, and SB. Matt Pulley goes 2-4 w/ 2-RBI, Matt Zmich 2-4 w/ RBI, Jeremy Martin 2-4 w/ 2R, Matthew Longfellow 2-3 w/ RBI, and Chris Cole added an RBI 3B.

August 7, 2016 (Week 16): HC Phillies defeated by Indy Howl 16-10 @ Scecina Memorial HS in Indianapolis.
08/07/16: In a back and forth battle between championship contenders the HC Phillies led the Indy Howl for nearly the entire game until the Howl came roaring back to first tie the game up at 10 and to force extra innings. The Howl outscored the Phillies 6-0 in the extra inning but it was a very good game from start to finish.

July 31, 2016 (Week 13): HC Phillies defeat the Indy Rangers 13-7 on Sunday at Badger Park - Shirley Stadium in Carmel, IN.
07/31/16: Kyle Hutton made the start on the mound for HCP recording two quick outs before allowing a 2-RBI 1B to put the Rangers on top 2-0. HCP answered right back as Matt Alspaugh draws a game lead off BB and eventually scores from 3B on a WP to cut the Rangers lead to 2-1 after 1. In the 2nd, Hutton would allow a Sac-Fly RBI before turning the Rangers away. HCP takes off on offense as Hutton leads off the 2nd inning with a 2B, Jeremy Martin would bring Hutton in on his RBI 1B, Scott Kessler would tie the game up with an RBI 1B scoring Jim Goodwin. HCP continued to cruise as Chris Cole brings in Matt Longfellow on an RBI groundout and Matt Pulley rips and 2-RBI 1B scoring Matt Alspaugh and Chris Cole as HCP goes from trailing 1-3 to taking a 6-3 lead after 2. Hutton would pitch a scoreless 3rd but HCP would come up empty in the bottom half as well to keep the score 6-3 Phillies after 3.
In the 4th, the Rangers would plate 1-R to cut the HCP lead to 6-4 but HCP would get the run right back in the bottom half of the inning. Scott Kessler scores on a WP and Ben Stenger rips a ball to LF that would be dropped allowing both Chris Cole and Matt Pulley to score to break the game open at 9-4 HCP. Hutton would pick up the first out before Matt Pulley comes on in relief to pick up back to back K's to turn the Rangers away in the 5th but not before the Rangers added 3 more R's to make it a 9-7 ball game. HCP would strand 2 in the bottom half to keep the score at 9-7. Pulley pitches a perfect top half followed by a lead off 2B by Matt Zmich who would score on Kyle Hutton's Sac-Fly RBI to increase the lead to 10-7 after 6. Pulley answers with another scoreless inning in the 7th and HCP adds 3 more R's on Matt Alspaugh's RBI 1B scoring Kyle Hallowell and Matt Pulley's 2-RBI 2B scoring Mark Benton and Alspaugh. The game would then be called due to the time limit being reached. FINAL SCORE: RANGERS 7 | HC PHILLIES 13.

HC Phillies defeat the Indianapolis Bandits 7-5 in 2nd game of a DH on Sunday, 7.31 @ Badger Park in Carmel, IN.
Chris Cole makes the start on the mound after the Phillies come up empty in the 1st. Cole pitches a scoreless 1st inning. Matt Pulley rips a 2B and would come around to score on Matt Zmich's Sac-Fly RBI to put HCP up 1-0. The Bandits would get that R right back to tie the game up at 1 after 2. Chris Cole continues to cruise on the mound with a scoreless 3rd inning after HCP came up empty in the top half of the inning. All tied up at 1 after 3.
In the top of the 4th inning Jeremy Martin comes through with an RBI 2B scoring Ben Stenger and Martin would come around to score on Jim Goodwin's Sac-Fly RBI to put HCP up 3-1. Chris Cole was locked in on the mound pitching another scoreless inning in the 4th. HCP came up empty in the 5th but Cole held the Bandits in check with a 3rd consecutive scoreless inning in the 5th. It was Chris Cole's day as he leads off the top of the 6th inning with a solo HR over the LF wall to put HCP up 4-1. Cole would finish his great outing with a 4th straight scoreless inning in the 6th to keep HCP on top 4-1 after 6.
In the top of the 7th the Phillies offense would strike again as both Chris Cole and Matt Zmich score on passed balls at the plate as HCP pulls away 6-1. In the bottom of the 7th, Matt Longfellow comes on to pitch a scoreless inning with 2 K's to keep HCP on top by 5 R's. HCP would come up empty in the 8th and the Bandits would bring across a R in the bottom half to cut the lead to 6-2. HCP would get that R right back as Kyle Hutton scores on Scott Kessler's ground ball to put HCP on top 7-2. In the bottom of the 9th, the Bandits would put together a rally scoring 3-R's but Ben Stenger would settle down to close the door on the Bandits with a fly ball to LF squeezed by Jeremy Martin for the final out of the game. FINAL SCORE: HCP 7 | BANDITS 5.

July 24, 2016 (Week 13): HC Phillies defeat the Indy Howl 9-7 in DH Game #2 @ Grand Park D1 in Westfield, IN
GAME 1: HCP came ready to play on offense today as Matt Pulley would get the scoring started with an RBI 2B scoring Scott Kessler to put HCP up 1-0 early. Kyle Hutton would then come through with an RBI FC scoring Chris Cole followed by Jim Goodwin's RBI 1B scoring Pulley to put HCP up 3-0 in the 1st. Matt Pulley makes the start on the mound for HCP sitting the Howl down in order in the 1st inning. HCP picked up the scoring once again as Chris Cole drives the ball to deep CF scoring both Matt Longfellow and Matt Alspaugh on a 2-RBI Sac-Fly. Matt Pulley follows Cole with his 2nd RBI 2B of the game scoring Cole and then Pulley would pitch a scoreless bottom half to put HCP up 6-0 after 2. HCP would come up empty following Kyle Hutton's 1B in the top of the 3rd. Pulley continued to cruise with another scoreless inning in the 3rd keeping HCP on top 6-0 after 3.
HCP would go down in order in the 4th and the Howl would come to life plating 2 R's in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-2. In the 5th, Jim Goodwin would 1B but would be stranded as HCP comes up empty in the 5th. The Howl would continue to chip away at the lead plating 2 more R's in the 5th to make it a 2-R deficit at 6-4. HCP goes down in order again in the 6th but a huge unassisted double play by Matt Alspaugh turns the Howl away in the 6th. Matt Pulley would 1B in the top of the 7th but the Phillies would go down in order after that. In the bottom of the 7th Pulley would catch the batter looking for a big game ending K sealing the victory for HCP. FINAL SCORE: HCP 6 | HOWL 4.
GAME 2: In game 2, Scott Kessler makes the start on the mound but the Howl get going early plating 2 R's in the 1st. Kessler would help his own cause with an RBI 1B scoring Matt Alspaugh to cut the Howl lead to 2-1 in the 1st. Kessler sits the Howl down in order with 2 big K's in the top of the 2nd. Kyle Hutton would draw a leadoff BB but HCP would come up empty in the bottom of the 2nd. The Howl would strike again, adding 2 more R's in the 3rd to increase their lead to 4-1 but with one swing of the bat, Matt Pulley would change the game driving the ball to deep right field and off the scoreboard with the bases loaded for the 1st grand slam in HCP history scoring Alspaugh, Kessler, Cole, and himself while putting HCP up 5-4. Jim Goodwin would add an RBI 1B scoring Kyle Hutton to put HCP up 6-4 after 3.
In the 4th, the Howl would answer right back plating yet another 2 R's to tie the game up at 6. Scott Kessler helps his own cause with a big RBI 1B scoring Mark Benton followed by Matt Pulley's RBI 1B scoring Matt Alspaugh to put HCP back on top 8-6. Kessler would later score on a PB to increase the HCP lead to 9-6 after 4. In the 5th, Kessler starts to cruise with a 1-2-3 inning to keep HCP on top by 3. HCP would go down in order in the 5th. Kessler continues to fire the ball to the plate with 2 big K's in the 6th to turn the Howl away again in the 6th. HCP came up empty once again in the 6th. In the 7th, the Howl would begin to rally with back to back lead off 1B's followed by a Sac-Fly RBI to cut the lead to 9-7. After that, the HCP defense would settle down as Kyle Hallowell takes a 2 out ground ball at first stepping on the bag for the final out, sealing the victory for HCP. FINAL SCORE: HOWL 7 | HCP 9.

GAME 1: Scott Kessler made the start on the mound for HCP in game 1 pitching a scoreless 1st inning. HCP struck early as Matt Pulley would bring in Scott Kessler on a SAC-FLY RBI followed by Eric Teall's RBI 1B scoring Chris Cole to put HCP up 2-0 after 1. Neither team would score in the 2nd and the Pirates would cut the HCP lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd.
Once again the pitchers and defense would dominate the 4th inning as neither team would score once again in the 4th. In the 5th the action would pick up as the Pirates would plate 5 R's in the top of the 5th to take a 6-2 lead over HCP. HCP answered right back as Scott Kessler would score Matt Zmich on an RBI 1B, followed by Kyle Hallowell scoring on a WP, and Eric Teall would bring in Matt Alspaugh on a SAC-FLY RBI to pull HCP back within a single R, trailing 6-5 after 5. Kyle Hutton comes on in relief and the Pirates would answer right back getting all 3 of the R's scored back in the top of the 6th to pull back ahead of HCP 9-5. HCP came up empty in the bottom of the 6th and were down to their final 3 outs trailing by 4 R's.
Kyle Hutton would pitch a scoreless 7th to keep the Pirates lead at 9-5. Kyle Hallowell and Matt Alspaugh would lead off the 7th with back to back 1B's before Scott Kessler comes up with a huge RBI 2B scoring Hallowell to cut the lead to 9-6. Chris Cole would come through next with a big shot to the gap scoring both Alspaugh and Kessler on his RBI 2B to make it a 1-R game at 9-8. Then with 1 out in the inning Ben Stenger comes through with a drive to CF and Chris Cole tags and scores the tieing run on Stenger's SAC-FLY RBI. HCP could not win in the 7th but had forced extra innings with a 4-R rally in the 7th. Eric Teall came on in the 8th and pitched a scoreless top 1/2 before HCP went down in order in the bottom. Teall came up with back to back K's to turn the Pirates away in the 9th. Then in the bottom of the 9th, Matt Zmich would steal 3B to put the winning R 90' away. Two pitches later, Matt Alspaugh comes through with the game winning walk off 1B scoring Zmich as HCP takes the victory in extra innings. FINAL SCORE: PIRATES 9 | HCP 10.

GAME 2: In game 2, HCP gets going early as Matt Pulley comes through with an RBI 2B scoring Matt Alspaugh to put HCP up early 1-0. Pulley would make the start on the mound as the Pirates would plate 2 R's in the bottom half to go on top 2-1. Neither team would score in the 2nd nor 3rd inning as the defense tightened up for both teams.
HCP would also come up empty in the top of the 4th and 5th innings and the Pirates would plate 2 R's in the 4th and another in the 5th to go on top 5-1 after 5. In the top of the 6th Matt Alspaugh would lead off inning with a 1B and would later score on Chris Cole's RBI ground out to cut the Pirates lead to 5-2. With the shot of the game, Eric Teall would drive the ball to deep left field and over the wall for a 2-RBI HR getting HCP right back in the game trailing 5-4. Pulley would pitch a perfect 7th inning to keep HCP within 1. Ben Stenger and Jeremy Martin would both reach but a bad call at 2B move the Phillies to their final out with nobody on base. Matt Zmich would draw a 2 out BB before the Pirates sealed the win with the final out in the 7th. FINAL SCORE: HCP 4 | PIRATES 5.
