2/18/2018Hornets Drop Two - Show Silver Lining

Northford, CT

The Hamden Hall Hornets dropped a pair this weekend putting them 9-4-1 on the season.  After a win over Kingswood-Oxford earlier in the week, the Hornets went on to play their second game against King School.  King had shut out the Hornets earlier in the season by a score of 7-0.  The Hornets entered these two games down some players.  Ironically, the Hornets held King in a 1-1 tie until the last five minutes of the 3rd period when a flurry of goals by King, 3 in less than a minute, propelled King to a 4-1 win.

The very next day, the Hornets had their Senior Day match-up versus Notre Dame of West Haven's JV squad.  Notre Dame of West Haven is a Division I CIAC program currently ranked 6th in the state. Going into this match-up, with a young Hornet team, no one was sure what to expect given the Notre Dam JV team is as strong as some area varsity teams.  Well, the Hornets did not let anyone down.  While the Knights went on to win 4-2, the highlights of the game included the team's steadfastness, a tough performance by all including an outstanding job in net by Katie Desa who had in the neighborhood of 40 shots on her.  Also, there were 19 penalties, 9 on the Hornets and 10 on Notre Dame. Those penalties included 2 game misconducts and 5 roughing penalties.  The Hornet bench adjusted to the rough play and still gave a strong performance.

This young Hornet team performed valiantly, kept the games close, frustrated their opponents, and showed a level of toughness for all of the Hamden Hall community to be proud of.

The Hornets have two more games left to the season, one tomorrow morning against St. Joe's (the second of two) and another this coming Friday (7PM, Taft School - Mays Rink) against Watertown Midget Full.

2/14/2018Hamden Hall Splits the Pair with K.O.

Hamden, CT

Louis Astorino Rink

Happy Valentines Day!  For the Hamden Hall Ice Hockey team it was SWEET.  Hamden Hall bounced back from an early K.O. goal and led the remainder of the game.  At one point, Hamden Hall led by 3 goals, but K.O. fought back and with unlucky goals (for Hamden Hall) they were in the game again.  Finally, at the start of the 3rd period, and while on a power-play, Hamden Hall scored the goal that would be the game winner.  This win means Hamden Hall splits the pair of match-ups with K.O. who is one of their only two losses thus far this season.

2/11/2018Hockey Wrap-Up 2/9 Wethersfield and Milford

Hamden Hall Hockey Wrap Up for Weekend of February 9-10

By C.C.

Hamden Hall v Wethersfield February 9 at Northford

On Friday February 9th the Hamden Hall Hornets faced off against Wethersfield at Northford Ice Pavilion.  Hamden Hall previously met Wethersfield at the Holiday Tourney on December 28 and disposed of them   9-5.  This weekend’s game was a tougher match.  Hamden Hall got on the board early with a goal with 2:05 off the clock in the first.  Aidan Cheney’s slapshot from the blue line caromed off the goalie and was tapped around in front of the goal and ultimately sent in by Charles Manger.

Wethersfield evened up the score in the 2nd period.  Shortly thereafter Hamden Hall answered with a goal from Matthew Martinelli off an assist by Liam Reynolds.  The score remained 2-1 until late in the third period when Hamden Hall’s Mateo Coppola scored on an empty netter late in the 3rd period to record a final score of 3-1.

Hamden Hall v Milford February 10 at Milford Ice Pavilion

Hamden Hall travelled to the Milford Ice Palace to take on the Milford Indians Saturday February 10.  The gutsy Milford side was no match for Hamden Hall who got on the board at the 35 second mark into the first period with a goal from Mateo Coppola off an assist from Michell Swick.  Hamden Hall’s Anthony Malonis tacked on Hamden Hall’s second goal 1:50 seconds into the first period.  Milford was able to answer with their first goal at 4:50 into the first.  Hamden Hall answered with 2 more goals in the first with Coppola’s second goal of the afternoon off the second assist from Mitchell Swick.  Charles Manger posted Hamden Hall’s fourth goal at the 13:35 mark off the assist from Grant Curtis.  In the second period Hamden Hall continued to press Milford with Swick and Coppola combining for their third assist and goal of the afternoon leaving the score at 5-1 at the end of the second period.  Hamden Hall scored two more goals in the third.  Anthony Malonis scored his second goal of the night off a pretty assist from defenseman Grant Curtis 8:40 into the third.  With 4: 30 seconds left in the third Mitchell Swick added to his three assists with his first goal of the night putting Hamden Hall up 7-1.  Milford answered late with one more goal and Hamden Hall’s Charles Manger wrapped up scoring with a goal off a face off  8-2.

2/4/2018Hornets Loss Lead in 3rd - KO wins 5-3

Newington, CT

It wasn't just any night this past Saturday at the Newington Arena. No, for Kingswood Oxford (KO) it was Senior Night and Hockey Night and the crowd of Wyvern supporters was big.  KO jump quickly onto the score board and took a 1-0 lead. Then Hamden Hall seemed to find their groove striking twice in the first period to take the lead 2-1. In the second period both Hamden Hall and KO scored again and as the second period ended Hamden Hall was pressuring and the momentum looked to be in their favor. With a fresh cut and a string of penalities that momentum gave way to first a tieing goal from KO and then a goal to take the lead. Finally, an empty netter sealed the deal and KO took the first of two match-ups with a score of 5-3. Hamden goal scorers included Wenxuan Guo, Joe Neubauer, and Matt Stapleton. The Hornets have two match-ups this coming week.  On Friday 2/9 they will take on Wethersfield at 8PM at Northford Ice Pavilion. The second game this week is Saturday 2/10 at 3PM against the Milford Indians at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Win or lose, the Hornet Hockey has been exciting and fun to watch! Come on out and cheer your Hamden Hall Hornets to victory!

1/26/2018Hornets Rally to Tie South Kent 3-3

Friday, January 26, 2018

In front of a supportive home crowd at the Northford Ice Pavilion the 6-1 Hamden Hall Hornets boys varsity ice hockey team took on a talented 1-3 South Kent Cardinals squad.   The teams had played to a tight, fast paced draw for the first 14 minutes of the game when the Cardinals managed to get on the board with a 4 on 4 goal.  In the second period South Kent posted two additional goals, the first coming at the 11:31 mark.  Later in the second period the Hornets escaped a 5on 3 situation only to fall victim to the Cardinals third goal in the ensuing 5 on 4. At the end of two periods the score stood 3-0 in favor of the visitors but the score did not reflect the tight match playing out on the ice and the superb work in net from the South Kent goalie to keep the Hornets off the scoreboard.

In the third period the Hornets got on the board at the 12:40 mark with a beautiful bar down shot by Matthew Martinelli off an assist from Charles Manger narrowing the Cardinal lead to 3-1.   2 minutes later Wenxuan Guo scored bringing the Hornets back into the game.  With 7 and 1/2 minutes left in the third the Hornets Charles Manger tied up the game putting in a deflection off the South Kent goalie.  The Hornets had great supportive play with one assist each from Liam Reynolds and Matthew Stapleton in the third.

The game didn't end there.  Hamden Hall killed a shorthand 5 on 4 situation with just 3 minutes left in the third. At the end of regulation the game stood at a 3-3 tie.  Jacob Tinson had a stellar night in goal turning away 24 shots, including several tough shots in the last 4 minutes of the game.

Hamden Hall next faces Norwalk/McMahon on Thursday, February 1 at 3:15pm at Veterans Park in Norwalk.
