SPRING VALLEY BASEBALL

2021 PLAYER/PARENT HANDBOOK

Academic Commitment

Dear Parents,
As a Coach at Spring Valley High School I value both academics and athletics and understand the

important role that each plays in the whole development of our children. The total development of a young person takes more than is offered in the regular classroom. Math, Science, English, and Social Studies are only a small part of the pieces needed to succeed in life. Leadership, courage, perseverance and hard work are attributes that are attained and polished through teamwork and competition in sports.

This makes participation on an athletic team essential to ensure the total development of your child. Where else in a school setting can your child learn the importance of teamwork while working toward a common goal with people of different experiences and backgrounds? Athletic competition guarantees your child a chance to react under pressure with the support of family, friends, coaches and teammates. Athletic participation also teaches your child the importance of hard work and shows them the rewards of building a team. They learn to set goals individually and as a team and then commence toward working together to see those goals into reality.

Our program focuses on building positive character daily through hard work and competition. I stress daily with our athletes the importance of living their life the right way and doing things to the best of their ability. We emphasize their roles as leaders within our school and community.

If your child is having a problem in class, we will work with you to solve the problem and to assist in any way possible. If you remove your child from athletics we can’t help academically and he misses out on the benefits of competing on a team. If grades become a problem, please give us the opportunity to attack the problem together. Academics will always come first in our program, thus the expression, “Student Athlete.” I understand that your child’s main responsibility is to come to school to earn a quality education and we stress this point daily in our program.

We look forward to working with you and your child to ensure that they receive the very best education possible here at Spring Valley High School.

Sincerely,
Robert Hendrix
Spring Valley High School Head Baseball Coach

Player Expectations

* Only two expectations:
1. Attendance
2. Positive Attitude/Respecting the Program

1. Attendance - Come every day on time. If you cannot physically practice due to injury or ailment, then

come dressed out and encourage your teammates. In the event that you cannot attend practice, call and let Coach Hendrix know. It is mandatory that you call and make me aware of all absences and explain as to why you will be missing practice. Do not send messages by other players. Irregular attendance makes it impossible for you to be a part of our team.

* There is no punishment for an excused absence or tardy. Only the Head Coach can excuse absences or tardies.

In-Season (Practice / Weight Room / Any team activity)

General Rule:
a) Unexcused Absence
* 1s t Offense = 3 days of ‘3 minute runs’/suspended 2 game * 2n d Offense =6 days of ‘3 minute runs’ /suspended 4 games * 3r d Offense =Dismissal from team

b) Unexcused Tardy
* 1s t Offense = 1 day of ‘3 minute runs’
* 2n d Offense = 2 days of ‘3 minute runs’
* 3r d Offense = 6 days of ‘3 minute runs’ / suspended for 1 game * 4t h Offense = 8 days of ‘3 minute runs’ /suspended 2 games
* 5t h Offense = Dismissal from team

3 minute runs = 3 completions of the 3 minute run program

2. Positive Attitude/Integrity – Come every day with a great attitude to learn and work hard. As a

player you are expected to always display respect towards your coaches, teammates, baseball program, and the school. Talking back, obscene language, and refusing to follow a directive given by any coach within the program will be dealt with immediately and severely. If you have an attitude detrimental to practice or the team you will be eliminated from practice. When this happens you will lose time in the games that week. If a poor attitude is habitual, the only consequence is dismissal from the team. If you have any issues inside or outside of school that are detrimental or represents our program or school in a negative way a suspension or removal from the team will occur.

* Remember that attendance and attitude are choices that you make as a player. You are in complete control of your choices.

* Only the Head Coach will dismiss a player. *

Uniform Policy

Baseball is a team sport and we will base our uniform policy around the team concept. Therefore we will be dressed alike and will take pride in wearing our Spring Valley gear. The practice uniform will follow the following dress guidelines and are not subject to change:

  • ●  Every player will be issued a green practice shirt, and a green hat. Our standard practice uniform is green top with white pants, and our all green hat.

  • ●  Only black, white, or school color cleats will be worn.

  • ●  On cold practice days pullovers and sleeves need to be worn. This is done for the

    protection of players’ arms. Hoodies are not allowed to be worn during baseball practice.

  • ●  Jewelry will not be worn at any time in our baseball setting and will not be brought onto the bus. When you enter the locker room, dugout, or weight room remove all jewelry.

  • ●  No Cleats worn on the bus or in the building at any time.

  • ●  All players in the program need to purchase a green helmet.

  • ●  Players should be clean cut. No specific haircut is required but players need to be well groomed.

Parental Expectations

  1. Per district policy, no parents allowed at scrimmages or practices this spring.

  2. Support your child as well as this program to the fullest.

  3. Always be on time to pick up your son from weight room and conditioning activities, practice, or any other team activities that may occur if they cannot drive.

  4. Be supportive of this coaching staff, including the head coach.

  5. If you have any questions, come to me with those questions, not assistant coaches or sub-varsity head coaches. I will meet with parents with a set meeting time. You may contact me at rhendrix@richland2.org or 803-622-0602.

  6. I will be more than happy to speak with you about your son’s performance or progress, but I do not discuss playing time. This is something that I do not discuss with parents. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this request.

  7. Be a part of your young mans life. Nothing is more important to a young man than having his parents supporting him at an athletic event.

  8. We preach academics to your son; we ask that you do the same at home. If there is a problem with your son’s academics, we will handle it together. Please consult me before taking your son off of the team. We can handle it together, just give it the chance.

  9. Feel free to contact me at any point if you have any questions. GO VIKINGS!
