ALL-NEWPORT COUNTY TEAM & PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

 

Following the completion of the 2011-12 high school hockey season, the Newport Daily News published, for the first time, its selection of an All Newport County Hockey Team, and its choice of the Newport County Hockey Player of the Year.  The All County team consisted of players selected from the varsity hockey programs at Middletown, and Portsmouth High Schools, and from the Rogers-Tiverton-Rocky Hill Co-operative Team.  The players recognized made up only a “first-team,” comprised of three forwards, two defensemen, and one goalie.  The Player of the Year was a separate designation, and that individual was not included among those honored by selection to the All Newport County Team.

 

Prior to the start of the 2014-15 season, in conjunction with a realignment of the league, Middletown replaced Tiverton on the Rogers led co-op team.  The new team became known as RMR.  With the resultant reduction in the number of Newport County high school hockey teams from three to two, the newspaper decided to discontinue its designation of an All County squad and Player of the Year.

 

Toward the end of the 2019-20 season the Newport Daily News once again published a list of the most outstanding players from Newport County.  In additon to playes from RMR and Portsmouth the selection also included players from Tiverton who skated the the Johnston / North Providence / Tiverton Co-Op team.  The list was not limited to just three forwards and two defensemen, and there was no designation as to 'First Team" or otherwise.  The newspaper did not reinstate its Player of the  Year selection.

 

No selections were published for the COVID shortened 2021 season.  The following season the feature was replaced with an article about who the coaches of the Newport County teams considered to be their most valuable and most improved players, along with several other minor categories not usually associated with hockey teams.  That post-season item was discontinued in 2025.   

 

Below is a list of the Patriots hockey players designated by the Newport Daily News as Player of the Year, and as members of the All Newport County Team.
