Coaches FAQ

Evaluation and drafting a team

Which divisions have a draft for team selection?

10U and older divisions.  8U does not have a draft and players are assigned to a team based on preference, school, etc.

How is the draft managed?

For 10U and older, players attend a evaluation day and each player is asked to perform fielding and batting.  Players are scored based on objective and subjective criteria.  The evaluations are provided to each coach prior to the draft.  Girls that do not attend the evaluation are cannot be drafted but rather are randomly assigned to teams.

Each coach will attend the draft meeting.  The draft order will be randomly assigned.  The order of the draft will be Team1, Team2, Team3, Team4, Team 4, Team3...  All players that were evaluated will be drafted first.  Then the players not evaluated will be selected randomly.

Any new sign ups after the draft will be assigned to teams in the order that they sign up.

The coach and assistant coach can preselect their daughters. However each preselected player counts as a draft pick.

For 10U division, the coach may preselect up to 2 additional players.  Like with daughters, each preselected player counts as a draft pick.

Can a coach attend evaluations?

Yes but it is not required.  Each coach will be given the evaluation results prior to draft day.

What information will the league agent provide before draft day?

You will receive a list of all players with their fielding and batting scores.  They will be ranked on fielding, batting and overall.

Addition information may be available such as playing history and dominate hand.

What if someone wants to play on my team?

For 10U and 12U, up to four players including the coaches daughters can be preselected.  However, the preselected players count as your first four draft picks.

What else is decided on draft day?

Practice times and team names are also determined on draft day.

Practice

When do teams practice?

Typically teams practice once during the week and once on the weekend.  After games start, practice is limited to the weekend practice since weekdays are filled with games.

How do I schedule makeup practices?

Standing practice times can be found on the Practice Schedule Page.  You are welcome to hold make up practices at times that are free but in general the make up practices are not scheduled so it is possible that someone else will be a the field at that time doing a makeup practice.  Consider using times where two fields are available.

Bases and Pitching Machine Access?

Please email the magsasoftball@yahoo.com for the combination to the field four shed where pitching machines and bases can be found.

How do I turn on the lights?

Lights can be turned on via the electrical boxes on the pole between field 3 and field 4 for field 4 and on the electrical boxes on the field 3 shed for field 3.  You will need a combination for the lock.  Please email the magsasoftball@yahoo.com for the combination.

Game Check List

Field Prepartion

If you are the home team, you are responsible for field preparation before the game.  Field preparation includes the following.

1. On field 3 for 10U games, you will need to put in the pitching rubber.  The pitching rubber should be 35 feet from the back of the home plate.

2. Chalk the field.   1st and 3rd base lines. The pitchers circle.  The batters box.  (Field Dimensions for chalk lines)

5. Place the bases.

If you are the visiting team, you a responsible for field clean up.

1. Pick up trash in the duggouts.

2. Drag the field.

3. Put up bases.

4. If you are last on out, you will need to turn off the lights.

5. After the game, the home team coach should report scores by sending them to [email protected].

Line Up

Of course you will need to determine the line up and your fielding assignments.  Bring an extra copy of the line up to trade with the apposing team.  They typically will provide to their score keeper.  This is a requirement and you will need to inform the apposing team of any changes from the line up you provided such as if you have a player that leaves or shows up late.

Score Keeping

Each coach will is required to provide a score keeper.  The home team will be the official score keeper and should report the results to the league agent.

Game Ball

Each coach will provide the umpire with a game ball.  Your league agent will provide the game balls to you before the first game.  The game ball is yours to keep after the game.  Many coaches give the game ball to a player that shows great effort or spirit during the game.

Games

Make Up Games

If due to rain out or other reasons, you need to make up a game, it is the coaches responsibility to work with the apposing team coach and the league agent to schedule a make up game.  Most make up games will be scheduled on weekdays in a similar time slot as regular games.  Some times, a weekend game in lieu of practice may be the best option.  You will need to first ask the league agent for available slots and then both coaches will select a suitable time slot.  Then the league agent should be notified so he can schedule umpires.  The website will be updated with the new schedule by the league agent.

Rain Outs

Check out the website home page for rain out information.

Game Flow Tips

To keep the game moving quickly, here are some helpful hints.

1. After two outs, the catcher should, if possible, be getting her gear on.  If there are two hots and the catcher is up to bat and gets on base, you can request a substitute runner.

2. Make sure all of the girls batting helmets have chin straps.  Umpires will not let a batter bat with a chin strap.

3. Have someone grab the bats after each hitter hits.

Player Positions

In 8U and 10U, each player should play an infield position for one inning based on a three inning game.  This is not required in 12U; however, as much as possible each player should get equal playing time.

In 8U and 10U, each team can field 10 players with four outfielders.

Score Keeping

After each game, the Home team coach should report the score by sending it to [email protected]

You will need a score keeper if you are the home team.  The follow web site is a good explanation on how to score a game. - http://www.baseballscorecard.com/scoring.htm

All Star Game and Team Selections

If an All Star Game is scheduled for the the division (8U, 10U or 12U), then each team will be required to make an All Star team selection.  The method used to select the team is up to the coach.  However, we recommend a team silent vote in most cases.

If there are four regular season teams, we will create two All Star teams with ten players.  Each regular season team will select five All Star Players.  If any player cannot attend the All Star Game, the team who's player cannot attend can select a replacement.

Team 1 - Five players from first place team and five players from fourth place team.  Coaches - Head Coach from first place team and head coach from fourth place team.

Team 2 - Five players from 2nd place team and five players from third place team.  Coaches - Head Coach from second place team and head coach from third place team.

Team 1 will play Teamm 2 in the All Star Game with Team 1 taking home field.

Umpires

We will try to have one umpire for 8U games and two umpires for 10U, 12U and 14U games.  No umpires are used for T-Ball games.

10U Rules

MAGSA is associated with ASA and the ASA rules will apply to all league ball except as noted in the following rule ammendment that can be downloaded - 10U Girls League Local Rules

12U Rules

12U plays by ASA Rules, with the following exceptions:

Each pitcher is limited to 3 innings. Unlike 10U, those 3 innings can be consecutive.

We use a 5 run limit in the first 4 innings and are unlimited from the fifth inning on. (When playing against other league's teams who do not use a pitcher inning limitation, this local league rule is typically dropped).

Teams are allowed free substitution, including the pitcher, and must bat the bench.

There will be a one hour and fifteen minute (1:15) time limit on each game, finish the inning. No inning will begin after one hour and fifteen minutes. Any inning in progress at the expiration of the time limit will be completed.

***CLARIFICATION***4-15-09** The official game time is 1 hour and 15 minutes. No new innings are to begin after that regardless of how many or few innings have already been played. During the regular season, an additional 15 minutes is allowed (for a total max. time of 1 hour and 30 minutes) to finish the inning. If the inning cannot be completed in that time, then the game is called and the game is over. The official score will be the score of the last completed inning unless the home team has brought the score to a tie in which the game will be scored a tie. Umpires may use discretion and allow a short amount of time to finish one more batter or one more out. A playoff game or a tournament game should be allowed to finish the inning without regard to time limit.
