Equip

Like any sport, there are some unique equipment requirements for short track speed skating.   There are some important safety items that every skater needs to have before they step onto the ice.  This equipment is not just for race day when you are competing at a meet, but is also required each week at practice.

Check out the following pictures (courtesy of Tia Lee) that outline the equipment required at practice and at a competition. The important difference is that an ISU approved helmet is required when racing at a meet.  If you don’t have one, you can purchase one from one of the vendors that are at these competions. The Club has a limited number of helmets and other skating gear that we have on consignment from one of the regular vendors.

Want to know how to sharpen your speed skates? The guy at Canadian Tire that sharpens your hockey skates will have no clue! Check out the video from the Ottawa Pacers that gives a good demonstration.

What do I need for practice?

  • protective glasses
  • bib style neck guard

Skaters interested in trying speed skating are requested to bring this equipment when they come for a trial. We have a limited supply of spare equipment.
