The American Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee is charged with the vital task of making sure that new inductees are the finest the sport has produced.
The Selection Committee consists of a minimum of twenty Selectors who vote for the potential inductees. The Committee is an assembly of representatives from around the globe, and is encouraged to select approximately half of the Selectors from present AF Hall of Famers. All appointments are presently open-end, but, may be terminated, at any time, by the Board of Directors.
The Committee makes a concerted effort to balance the various geographical areas. All Selectors make their decisions independent of discussion with other selectors and do not disclose their voting choices prior to the announcement of the new inductees. Each voter is asked to apply the following Additional Criteria when making their selections.
Additional Criteria to be considered where applicable:
1. Ability, Achievement, and overall credentials in the sport of American football.
2. Performance skills.
3. Participation in the sport at large.
4. Contribution to the community.
5. Moral character and personal integrity.
6. The nomination was not submitted by the nominee.
Any one or more of these criteria may be compromised for any candidate at the determination of the AFHOF Board of Directors.
Method of Election: Selectors receive a roster, along with detailed biographies on each candidate, which are then carefully scrutinized and verified.
Each Selector must vote for or against a nominee. Write-in votes are not permitted. Each nominee must receive at least 80 percent approval of the Committee before they can be elected.
Voting (Example for a Player): Voting shall be based upon the player's record--individual stats, awards and/or honors (MVP, Player of the Year, etc.) in the Category in which he/she has been nominated--overall playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.
Time of Election: The duly authorized representatives of the AFHOF shall prepare, date and mail ballots to each Selector no later than the 5th day of November in each year in which an election is held. The Selector shall sign and return the completed ballot within twenty (20) days. The vote shall then be tabulated by the duly authorized AFHOF representative..
Certification of Election Results: The results of the election shall be certified by an officer of the American Football Hall of Fame., who shall send out congratulatory notifications. The AFHOF shall then release the results for publication.
Please be aware, that anyone may nominate a qualified person who has been connected with American football, in any capacity, simply by submitting the Pre-application to the AF Hall of Fame. The qualifications that a nominee must meet are listed on the application. For example, a player must not have played for at least five seasons. Therefore, to be considered, a candidate for the 2013 Class the player must have concluded his/her career no later than the 2007 season. Once the nomination is received, the nominee is notified and a formal application requested.
Also, be assured, that every qualified nomination received will be processed and their information forwarded to the Selection Committee for their perusal and vote. Each nominee must receive an approval rating of, at least, 80% by the Committee.
Presently, there is no set number for any class of inductees. However, that may change at any time.
Amendments: The Board of Directors of the American Football Hall of Fame reserves the right to revoke, alter or amend these rules at any time.
