History

The first introduction of soccer in our area was from the imigrants in the surrounding Coal Mining towns.  This was the general trend for most soccer in South Western PA.  Scottish imigrants brought it to Cokeburg in the 1930s.  Here is a 1935 photo of the Cokeburg Soccer Team.

Ellsworth also had a coal mining team.  Ellsworth is often lead by player-manager Walter "War Horse" Magera pictured above on the left.  Magera was on several Loca, regional and national level teams in the Pittsburgh Area.  These clubs included McKnight Beverage, Castle Shannon WW Riehland Gallatin Tigers.    Captain and manager of the Ellsworth Coalmen before the World War.  After WWII Magera would start the Bentleyville Vikings a club that shared the name with the local Bentleyville Baseball team.  Magera would again return to Ellsworth where he lead his most successful team as manager.  Teh 1952 Ellsworth club would have several players from the former National Open Cup Champions Gallatin Tigers.  Magera lead Ellsworth to one of the biggest upsets in the entire country when they defeated Harmarville in 1952 Amateur . Harmarville would eventaully win the biggest cup in the nation winning the US Open Cup.   The Ellworth Coalmen would be the most successful coal mining team in our area.

2006-2007 Inaugural Bentworth High School Girls Soccer team.

Veteran High School Coach Dan Haywood took the helm of the girls program in 2006.  Haywood spent a long career at Charleroi High School where he lead the Cougars to back to back WPIAL and PIAA Finals in the 19999-2000,2000-2001 Seasons.

In the meantime Bentworth Girls Soccer was growing in the youth level as well.  This group of ladies became the first all girls travel team in BAYSA history.  This group of girls would also be some of the first members of the first Bentworth Middle School team in Fall 2009.

2010-2011 Season The Lady Bearcats qualified for the WPIAL playoffs for the first time in school history.

the 2011-2012 Lady Bearcats clinched a share of the Class A Section II Championship.  The Bearcats shared the title with Serra Catholic.

Leading the 2011 Championship team was team captain midfielder/forward Erin Ritzer.  Erin scored 36 goals in the campaign and voted the top player in Section II.  She also became the first female player in school history to be named to the All WPIAL team.

After fall 2013 season Dan Haywood reitred after 8 seasons at the helm of the girls program.  Haywood finished his Lady Bearcat career with a 2011 Section Championship, 3 WPIAL Playoff Appearances and a 60-74-5 record.

Tyler Hamstra, the longterm boys 1st assistant took the girls head job in winter of 2013-14.  Hamstra spent almost a decade coaching alongside boys head coach Gary Amos.

Hamstra would bring back former standout Lady Bearcat Heather Podroskey as his first assistant.

Goal scoring was hard to find after graduation of Erin Ritzer, Kaylee Selvoski, and Kelsey Plute.  A stingy defense was a big part of success in a tough section for the new coach.  A huge part of that defense was keeper Jeanna Brewer who set school record 11 shutoutsin a single season.

Senior Captain Miranda Vankirk played a pivotal role in Hamstra's first two seasons.  A natural defender, Vankirk was moved into an attacking midfielder.  Vankirk finished her senior season as the 2nd highest vote getter in the section and the 2nd player in program to be named All WPIAL.

the 2016-2017 Lady Bearcats went undefeatd as they brought home their 2nd Section title in school history.

A big part of the success was the leadership and play of the senior class.  Senior Captains Bea Kossel and Danielle Gondak would become the 3rd and 4th player in school history to be named to the All WPIAL Team.  Kossels younger sister Cande would be named the 5th.  Bea would finish her career with 40 goals making her one of the top goal scorers in program.  Danielle a 4 year starting defender would be named the top vote getter in the section.  One spot ahead of Kossel.  Gondak who had a different centerback partnership in all 4 years would become arguably the top defender for the Bearcats.

If leadership from the older players would be part of the success the technical and scoring power from freshman would be the the other big part.  Freshman All Section duo Paige Marshalek and Jocelyn Timlin woiuld combine for 56 goals and two of the top scoriers in WPIAL and the two top scorers in the section.

The Lady Bearcats would exorcise their demons in the first round of the playoffs.  After 6 unsuccessful attempts to winning a playoff game the girls would finally get a victory VS Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic at Upper St. Clair.  The eventual game winner was enough to advance to the WPIAL Quarter Finals.

In the WPIAL Quarter Finals the Lady Bearcats would take advantage of 3 set pieces from almost the same same exact spot.  Freshman talisman Paige Marshalek would score from 30 yards out and serve in two assists to Senior Captain Bea Kossel.  Kossels brace would be enough to beat the South Side Beaver Rams and adance to the WPIAL Semi Finals.
