Boys 2012 Varisty Championship article
St. John the Evangelist Varsity Boys Soccer team won the Catholic Youth Organization City Championship on Sunday, November 4, 2012 against Holy Redeemer of Kensington by a final score of 1 - 0. The game was played in the Stadium at the Germantown Soccerplex in front of a large crowd. The game was hard fought, and was a back and forth affair, for the most part. Both teams gave everything they had and made this a tremendous game to watch, fitting what a championship game should be.
The key to our team's success was not only a group of strong, skilled players, but most importantly a determined and selfless bunch that sacrificed for the team and played positions that may not always have been their primary choice. It is very difficult to single out one, two or three major contributors, as this group was truly a team. This year's team also battled adversity as four of the kids missed part of the season with injuries. As was the case 2 years ago when this group won the JV Championship, the defensive corps once again led the way by only allowing 5 goals during the regular season, and none in the playoffs. We scored 29 goals during the 10 game season, including playoffs, while creating many scoring chances each game. We ended the season with a 9 - 1 record, including the Championship game.
This year's team was special because of their comraderie, commitment and work ethic, and the result was the first ever Varsity CYO Soccer City Championship for St. John the Evangelist. Coaches and parents alike are proud to have been part of and witnessed a memorable season for the 2012 St. John the Evangelist Varsity Boys Soccer team. This group of kids has been working since they were in Kindergarten to prepare for an opportuninty to accomplish what they did on November 4. Of the 15 kids on the roster, all have played club soccer at one time or another, with 11 still playing at either a Classic Division 1 level or NCSL Division 4 and above. Their hard work has included many years of year round soccer, winter and summer indoor and a real commitment to the sport. Everyone in this group of kids currently attends St. John the Evangelist school, and many will probably go on to play high school soccer.
Girls 2011 JV Championchip article
The JV girls played with inspiration and tremendous heart as they defeated a very talented Holy Redeemer team. Thanks to the defensive efforts of Adriana Colburn, Lucy Reardon, Ellie Johnson, and Molly Murray the SJE girls kept the HR girls from taking a lot of good shots and when the HR girls did get a chance, Melina Skinner blocked everything coming her way. On the offensive side of the ball, Teresa Brogan, Colleen Hathway, and Betsy Haywood provided solid front line play to keep the ball in HR's side of the field. Isabelle Peterson, Ashley Ramos, Ella Torp and Mary Muldoon challenged HR's midfielders stealing many balls to start the offensive push for Maura Lyons, and Meggie Burgess. With any evenly matched teams, it's usually a big play that makes the difference. This game was no exception as the 3M's hooked up again for a game breaking play with 9:52 left in the game. Mollie's inbounds throw-in down the line to Mary, Mary's feeder pass into the middle of the field and just beyond HR's backline defenders aloud Meggie Burgess to take a run at the ball. She touched the ball forward and outran the 3 HR defenders, froze the goalie and one timed a shot to the lower right corner for the winning goal.
Many thanks to Coach Mulldoon and Hathway for all their guidance. Congratulations to the girls for an outstanding performance. You really stepped up your game! All your hard work over the years has paid off!!
