The James A. Sexton Memorial Assistant Coach of the Year

James A. Sexton was a long time assistant to Hall of Fame coach Steve Bradley at Van High School.  The Van Bulldog teams qualified for 15 state tournaments between 1981-1999. They won five Class A State Championships and were Class A Runner-Up five other times. This award was created in his honor in 2009. James had a big kind heart and was a great coach who players loved and coaches respected.

The WVBCA would like to recognize Robert Massey, the 2024 James A. Sexton Assistant Coach of the year!

Coach Massey is a current assistant coach at George Washington High School. He helped lead them to the 2022 AAA State Championship Game. He also had stints at South Charleston under Mike Carte and at Nitro where he coached with Hall of Fame coach Steve Pritchard. From 2006-2013 Massey was the head coach at Capital High School where his team won 3 Sectional titles and had 2 Regional Finals appearances. In 2008 he was voted the MSAC coach of the year, and was the 2010 Kanawha Valley Coach of the Year. Massey has coached numerous players who went on to play collegiately and one player who was taken in the MLB draft. He has served on the WVBCA Board of Directors and is an active ABCA member. He has coached in the North/South All-star game 3 times and has been the director of it multiple times as well.
