WELCOME TO MAYO YOUTH WRESTLING
Our Goals:
Introduce wrestling to kids and parents who do not have experience.
Develop and challenge experienced wrestlers.
To be a healthy fun experience for the kids of all abilities.
Develop teamwork and friendships between kids and parents.
Have kids graduate from the youth program into the high school program with basic skills and
experience.
Clothing:
Singlet or athletic style shorts (no buttons or zippers) and T shirt. No jewelry.
Wrestling shoes are recommended. Clean dry tennis shoes can be worn. We request a pair different
from their street shoes.
The club has a small inventory of used shoes that we will loan out after the season starts. We
encourage our parents to bring any extra to our practices and sell or donate them to a Mayo family or
the club.
Head gear is optional. Most beginning wrestlers do not use them.
Most kids wear a pair of sweat pants over shorts or singlet to practice and get ready in the hall near
the practice room.
Practice:
Door # 6 is the primary access after school hours. The wrestling room is located to the right, off door #
6.
If parents do not stay at Mayo for practice please be on time for picking the kids up.
Cancellation Policy – weather: If school is canceled, practice is canceled. Cancellations will be sent out
via email and posted on our Facebook site: Mayo Wrestling Association
Parents are encouraged to help with practice and/or observe. At times parents in the room may be a
distraction to their own child. Too many extra conversations can also be a distraction to coaches! We
understand that parents will want to see what their kids are doing.
There will be warm-ups and stretching followed by instruction, drills and hard wrestling. Games will
usually be played near the end of practice.
Kids will be matched up with various partners of similar size, age and experience.
It is a good idea to have wrestlers shower or bathe after practice at home.
If a wrestler has a cold sore or other rash keep them from practice. We have not had many issues or
problems but want to take precautions.
Covid or other illnesses
If a parent or wrestler has been exposed to covid or is in quarantine, they cannot come to practice. A
good rule of thumb is if the wrestler can attend school, then they can attend practice. If they can’t go
to school, then they can’t practice.
If a wrestler or parent feels ill for any other reason, they should not attend practice.
Competitive Wrestling:
Participation in competitions are optional
Parents of inexperienced wrestlers should consult with a coach before entering in a tournament.
In December, we will be hosting a four team tournament at Mayo. The tournament will focus on getting
inexperienced wrestlers and parents familiar with tournament competition.
There are individual tournaments in area towns each weekend. Coaches will try to identify specific
tournament(s) each week they will be attending and encourage those that want to compete to go
there.
We may participate in a few team tournaments this year. We will have wrestle offs to determine who
will be on the roster for each weight class. More information will be available closer to each team
tournament.
Volunteer Needs:
There will be times and activities during the year where we will ask for volunteers to help with youth
events, H.S. events, fundraisers etc. We are all volunteers and appreciate involvement.
Share your thoughts and communicate. We want this to be a good experience for the kids and we need to
know what your kids are thinking.
Encourage the kids to get to know each other. Please help by asking your child about their practice partners
and encourage them to learn the names of the kids they do not know yet.
Discipline Policy / Conflict Resolution: We expect good behavior from wrestlers in and out of the wrestling
room. We understand that we are dealing with kids of different ages that may have life issues that we may or
may not know about. (Parents also!). All issues will be dealt with using common sense based on the totality of
circumstances.
Communication: Info will be given out at practice and/or sent to email address.
