WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DEPT.

 GO-HAWK ATHLETIC PARENTAL GUIDE

Because your son/daughter is involved in W-SR Go-Hawk Athletics please be advised of the following items:

 Major Focus Items

  1. Sportsmanship: Many things that we say or do may reflect upon us as a school in a positive or a negative way. Please promote the Conduct Counts program at all events, home or away. I know we all get better here. We want to educate how we are rated and that is from the officials working the game. We want to cheer for our teams. Negative cheers at our opponents are not acceptable. We plan to work towards getting better.  Four groups rated. Fans Student and Adult, Participants and Coaches.

  1. Transportation: Athletes are to go to and from away events in school sponsored vehicles. With COVID -19 we have allowed parents who choose to drive their own son/daughter to the away event. We ask that you communicate this. If parents wish for their child to return home with them instead of on the bus, notify the coach in person and sign a request to take your son/daughter with you.  This is only for your son/daughter, not other student/athletes.  No school vehicles may have the windows painted or other signs placed in windows.

  1. Communication Guidelines: Parents should feel free to talk to a coach about the following(a) progress of their son/daughter(b) concerns about their child’s behavior. Coaches generally expect to do thisand appreciate your interest. We encourage having your son/daughter be the first to communicate with their coach. The following must be followed, however.Parents are not to discuss: (a) playing time (b) what level the athlete is on (1st team, 2nd team, etc.) (c) play calling or team strategy (d) other student-athletes. The athlete should be the one to talk to his/her coach about these concerns. Please adhere to these guidelines.  Keep all communication on a positive note and please discuss at appropriate times.

  1. Special Concerns: If there are special concerns regarding your son/daughter in relation to the athletic programs they are involved in, feel free to contact me at the high school at (319) 352-2087.

     5.  Good Conduct Policy::Your son/daughter has a copy of this policy in his/her student handbook (pages).  I encourage you to read this

policy with your son/daughter.  Encourage you son/daughter to make good choices and avoid situations that will put him/her in violation.

This policy was set up with coordination of students, teachers, coaches, parents, school board members and administration of

          Waverly-  Shell Rock HS.

      6. Sports Medicine Services   Destry Sperfslage serves as W-SR’s ATC. His services at the school consist of immediate evaluation

and treatment of injuries, and a thorough plan to ensure our athletes receive the best medical care and are returned to their respective

sports in a timely manner. It has been proven most effective to have these athletic injuries filtered thought our athletic trainer to ensure

proper communication to coaches, parents, and physicians. The streamlined system allows for the best possible care to our student-

athletes. Athletic training coverage will be provided at most home events and practices throughout the year.

     7.  Grades: Student athletes are reminded that a good academic standing is part of being in   school.  Extra-curricular activities, athletics

and academics go along with the entire educational process.  Encourage your son/daughter to do their best with academics and all

programs they are involved in.  Your son/daughter will get a copy of this new policy in his/her handbook on page.  I encourage you to

read this with your son/daughter.  A student must be passing all courses to be eligible.

      8. Attendance:  School attendance is a requirement for the full day if your child is to perform or participate in a game/event/practice that

same day.  School-sponsored activities, doctor’s appointments, funerals and college visits are excusable.  Any other exceptions will need

          prior administrative approval.

      9. Assumption of Risk:  When playing in HS athletics/activities, we want each student/athlete and parent/guardian to understand that

there are chances of getting hurt. In some cases injuries can be severe and could cause accidental death. COVID 19 added to the mix

this year, be aware of that things can change very quickly. We need to follow the procedures put in place if we have an exposure.

    10. Weight Room Policy:  All athletic Teams incorporate in-season lifting into their training. We strongly encourage all to be involved in off-

season conditioning as well. These sessions are viewed as part of the weekly practice routine for athletes. Athletes are required to

discuss modifications to their training with Coach Rinehart prior to the training sessions. Injured or hurt athletes will have their workout

modified so they are allowed to continue to work with their team.  If you have any specific questions contact our Director of Sports

          Performance, Destry Sperfslage:  [email protected]
