Selection Process

Selecting which team to invite to which Sunshine Bowl Championship Series game is difficult in the “Minor League, Adult Amateur, Semi-Pro” system.  In making our decision, SBCS Selectors will consider the following criteria:

1. Win/Loss Record

     a. Games played matter (minimum of 12 games for 3A)(minimum of 10 games for 2A)

     b. more than 1 forfeits accepted will count against you (No more than 2 forfeit wins will count towards your overall National record)

     c. Out of league games matter (Games with refs, official time, and official score will count towards overall National record) 

 

2. Championship/Play-off Status: (difference between a first-round play-off loss and Championship game loss or win) Strength of Schedule

     a. Strength of League: 

          i. 3A vs. 2A: brief description 

          ii. Notable Top 100 teams in league (past or present)

          iii. League Longevity

          iv. States that league teams cover (see league coverage)

     b. Travel Games

          i. Home vs. Away

     c. Teams can also schedule tough pre-season matchups if post season tournaments are not possible for your area

 

3. Size of League: (teams that finish the season will determine league size)

      a. If you are playing in a league with less than 6 teams finished, we will classify you as independent.

      b. Any league with less than 8 teams, teams will need to participate in post season tournaments to up your National “stock”. You cannot play in a National Game without National credentials during the season.

      c. 8 team to 14 team leagues are encouraged to participate in regional tournaments.

      d. 15 team plus leagues are encouraged schedule pre-season games if needed.

 

4. League Coverage: It is encouraged regional leagues work together to get to the National level.

      a. Local: Leagues that cover one (1) to three (3) cities or towns with all travel with 90 min

      b. Regional: League’s coverings two (2) to four (4) States and multiple cities with travel up to 6 hours

      c. National: Leagues covering five (5) to ten (10) states with travel 10 or more hours (Leagues of this size accompanied with competition will be considered for National title invite without regional tournament play.)

 

5. League Officials Participation 

      a. Leagues will have league provide letter of recommendation. 

      b. League officials address any organizational and behavioral problems.

 

6. Ability to participate

      a. Application Completion

      b. Fees paid

.     c. Ability to travel

 

7. Post League Tournament Win

 

Using the Selection Guidelines below, the Bowl Championship games are appointed and invitations awarded.  Teams selected to participate in the Sunshine Bowl and subsequently opt to play in a post-season tournament, could jeopardize their inclusion.  However, teams that win post season tournaments can up their “stock” especially teams that play in smaller leagues or know its other teams with similar credentials.  You may qualify for a game but may not be selected for a game because of the credentials of another team.

Remember, we can only invite, so, please note that based on team availability, all guidelines are subject to change.

 

AFNT 3A National Championship Game (Spring & Fall) - League Champion vs. League Champion. Must be 3A ranked with no more than one (1) loss.

AFNT 2A National Championship Game (Spring & Fall) – League Champion vs. League Champion. Must be 2A ranked with no more than one (1) loss.

3A National Bowl Championship Game (Spring & Fall) - League Champion or League Runner Up vs. League Champion or League Runner Up.. Must be 3A ranked with no more than two (2) losses.

2A National Bowl Championship Game (Spring & Fall) – League Champion or League Runner Up vs. League Champion or League Runner Up. Must be 2A ranked with no more than two (2) losses.

Hall of Fame Bowl Championship Game (Spring) – Must have participated in the Sunshine Bowl in the past.  Must have participated in their league’s play-off team had have won at least eight (8) games.

Independence Bowl Championship Game (Spring) – Must have participated in their league's play-offs and have won at least eight (8) games.

President Day Bowl Championship Game (Fall) – Must have participated in their leagues play-offs and have won at least eight (8) games.

Sunshine Bowl Championship Game (Fall)– Must have participated in their league conference championship and have won a post season tournament. Must have won at least 8 games with no more than two (2) losses. A team with more than two (2) losses must be a league champion.
North/South Bowl Championship Game (Spring or Fall) – Must have participated in their league’s play-offs and have won at least eight (8) wins.
