Stat Definitions
Rebound
- Recovering live ball after FGA or FTA - Shot does not need to hit backboard or rim to be considered a rebound
1.) Being first person to gain control even going through other hands
2.) Tip in attempt in order to score basket counts as a rebound
3.) Tapping or batting the ball in controlled manner to teammate
4.) If a FGA is blocked the first person to recover should be awarded a rebound
Assist
- Pass leading directly to a score - Number of dribbles taken after pass is not factor
1.) The receiver of pass should have INTENTION to score as soon as pass is received. If receiver needs to head fake or gain balance this does not take away from being an assist. However any hesitation should eliminate assist.
2.) In principle, an assist is awarded when the pass creates the play, not the shooter. When the shooter creates the play, no assist should be awarded.
Block
- Alter the flight of a FGA leading to a missed shot- Alter the flight of a FGA leading to a missed shot - Rebound ALWAYS follows a blocked shot unless ball goes out of bounds (dead ball) - A block shot that leads to a shooting foul is NOT considered a block shot.
- A block shot after a foul is called is NOT considered a block shot.
Steal
- Defensive player causes turnover
- There must be a corresponding turnover awarded to an offensive player
1.) Taking the ball away from opponent
2.) Intercept pass
3.) Tap ball away from player or deflect pass leading to his team receiving possession
4.) The tapping or deflection of the ball to a teammate does not have to be controlled
5.) Generally the statistician should award the steal to the defensive player who initiated the turnover
6.) The only time a steal can be awarded when the ball goes dead is when the actions of a defensive player causes a jump ball situation awarding his team the ball
7.) A player taking a charge or provoking a violation (travelling or backcourt) is NOT to be credited with a steal
Turnover
- Offensive player giving away possession of ball
1.) Offensive player loses possession holding/dribbling ball leading to defense gaining possession
2.) Violations (travelling, 3 second & 8 second violations, going out of bounds)
3.) Passes leading to violation should be given to passer. (example: teammate trying to save a bad pass steps out of bounds in process)
4.) Generally, the passer is responsible for their pass. Only if the pass “should have been caught” then receiver should be given TO. If there is any doubt award TO to the passer
5.) Offensive fouls (w/ or w/o ball) before a FGA
Field Goals
- A FG atempt that is missed and leads to a shooting foul is NOT considered a missed shot. However if the shot is made then the shot is counted as a FG made.
