Hawks Finish NIT with Impressive 3-0 Victory

The Hawks rounded out the 2026 NIT event in Minneapolis on Sunday. They faced the Utah Lady Grizzlies in their final game at 8:40 Sunday morning. Madison Froese got the start in net for the Hawks.

At the time of writing this report the game sheet is still not available, so I'll be going off a memory that may be a little foggy from a weekend of good times with the outstanding parent crew. We even managed to celebrate a big 50th birthday party!!!

The first period was a scoreless one and the shots were close, but the Hawks had a 7-5 advantage. The Hawks looked like the stronger team as they skated hard, fought to win battles and moved the puck well.

The second period saw the Hawks grab the lead on the power play. Sinead Convery moved the puck over to her D partner Elin Olsen. Olsen slid it down to Gianna Yaschyshyn, who ripped a shot far side to make the score 1-0. The Hawks poured on the pressure in the second, but couldn't add to the lead. They outshot the Utah team be a decent margin in the middle frame.

The third period saw the Hawks add two more goals to earn their first win of the season. Rylen Fallis scored an awesome short handed goal. She forced a turnover in the Utah corner and moved the puck to Allie Huck at the point. She immediately drove to the net and found the rebound generated by Huck's good hard shot and burried it to get her first goal as a U18 Hawk. Sasha Lambert extended the lead shortly after finding open ice in the low slot and finishing off a great pass from Claire Boyd that came from below the goal line.

Sophia Cox was chosen as player of the game and the team couldn't have found a more deserving choice. She was full of jump all game long and used her speed and hockey sense to create several good scoring chances. She was stopped on each occasion, but if the effort continues moving forward, she will be a force to reckon with and will start to fill the scoresheet at some point in the coming weeks. Madison Froese earned her first shutout of the season and we'll get you the exact number of saves she made once the game sheet is available.

The Hawks resume league play this weekend as they host the Interlake Lightning on Saturday, October 24th at 1:30pm in Morden. It's our annual Hockey Fights Cancer Fundraiser where there will be lots of baking to buy. All proceeds will be donated to South Central Cancer Resource. We also travel to Portage on Sunday to face the Central Plains Capitals at 2:30pm at the BDO Centre.

Hawks Battle Hard, Suffer Second Loss at NIT

The Hawks only had one game on Saturday of the NIT. They faced off against the Atlantic Coast Academy. Charlie Fust got the start in this one.

The opening period was well played by both teams. The Hawks fell behind in a familiar fashion, on the penalty kill. A point shot got through and while Fust made the initial save, the opponents found the rebound first to jump ahead 1-0 late in the first.

The Hawks battled hard the rest of the way, but couldn't even the score. Claire Boyd had a great chance that was stopped and Bree Pearce collected the rebound and fired one off the crossbar. The opponents added a late empty netter to make the final 2-0.

The Hawks enjoyed the rest of the day taking in a very entertaining NCAA female hockey game between the Ohio St Buckets and the Minnesota Golden Golphers. They then spent the last of their hard earned money at the Mall of America.

The girls have one more chance to pick up a victory Sunday morning against the Utah Lady Grizzlies.

Hawks Tie One and Lose One to Open the NIT Weekend

The Hawks had a busy day on Friday in Minneapolis. They opened the NIT with a great game against Florida Alliance 19U. The final score was 2-2 and Gianna Yaschyshyn and Sophia Cox tallied for the Hawks. G's goal was set up by Cox and Ella Victor, while Cox' marker was assisted by Claire Boyd and Ariel Rondeau. Both goals that got past Hawks starter Charlie Fust were power play point shots that she didn't see. The first came on a two player disadvantage. Sinead Convery was selected as the player of the game.

The girls then went to Top Golf to work on their swings. A good time was had by all, including the parents who really enjoyed celebrating one of our new parents' milestone birthday. Bonne fête!!!

The girls headed back to the rink to face Team Colorado 19U. We didn't have quite as much jump in our second game and ended up on the wrong end of a 2-0 final. Madi Froese was in net and made 28 saves in the loss.

The day finished off with an after supper walk to Crumbl Cookie. The Hawks will play one game on each of the next two days to round out their weekend. They'll face off against the Atlantic Coast Academy 19U Saturday and the Utah Lady Grizzlies 19U team on Sunday.

Hawks Lose to Ice in Shootout

The Hawks hosted the Winnipeg Ice on Sunday evening of the Thanksgiving weekend. The Ice were 4-0 to start the season and Hawks were winless in their first four. The Hawks were joined by Jr Hawk Claire Howe for this game. Madison Froese got the start in net.

The Hawks were full of jump and energy right from the opening faceoff. It was clear they were going to be hard to play against. The only goal of the opening period was scored by the Ice, on a good point shot, while on their second powerplay of the period. After twenty, the Ice led 1-0 and outshot the Hawks 11-7.

The second period saw the Hawks tie the score. The Ice tried to clear the zone with a rim up the boards. Sinead Convery pinched down the wall and the puck jumped out to Claire Boyd who missed on her shot attempt, but Bree Pearce found the puck and ripped a great shot to the top of the net. The game was tied after forty and the shots were 24-17 Ice.

The third period was another intense, well played period. The Ice regained the lead with just over 12 minutes to play when they took advantage of a Hawks turnover right in front of their net. The Hawks didn't quit. They continued to push forward and got the equalizer with seven minutes to play. Gianna Yaschyshyn won on offensive zone draw to Ella Victor and her shot found the net to make it 2-2.

This one needed overtime and despite a few powerplays, neither team could score. We then went to the shootout, which is now a five round affair. The Ice scored on their first attempt and then the goalies took over, making 9 combined stops in a row. Despite losing 3-2 after the shootout, the Hawks should be proud of their solid 65 minute effort and for earning their first point of the season.

The Hawks are off to Minneapolis next weekend to compete in the NIT tournament.

Hawks Come Close, but Fall to the Winnipeg Ice

The Hawks were in Winnipeg Saturday night to face the defending league champions. Madison Froese got the start in net for the visitors.

The Ice were the stronger team in the opening period, generating several top notch scoring chances. They opened the scoring on a nice drive to the net, with a strong finish. The Hawks tied things up three minutes later on the power play. Elin Olson moved the puck out of her zone and found Bree Pearce in the neutral zone. Pearce offloaded to a streaking Gianna Yaschyshyn who sped in all alone and fired one glove side to record her first goal as a U18 Hawk! The score remained tied through twenty and the Ice outshot the Hawks 13-5 in the period.

The second period was not kind to the Hawks. They were outshot 21-2 and outscored 5-1. Their goal was a awesome effort by the line of Pearce, Yaschyshyn and Sasha Lambert. Bree and G did some great work below the goalline on a very aggressive forecheck. They won the puck and Lambert found an open spot in front of the Ice goal. When the pass came out, it was off her stick in an instant and past the Ice keeper.

The Hawks had a very strong showing in the final period. They outshot the Ice 9-8 and scored two goals in the first seven minutes to give themselves hope. Sophia Cox scored with a nifty backhand on a breakaway and Claire Boyd added a powerplay marker shortly after. That goal was credited to Skyla Hildebrand, from Boyd and Cox. The Hawks continued to battle, but couldn't close the gap further. The 6-4 loss moves them to 0-2 on the young season. Makayla Warnick was chosen player of the game for her steady presence on the blue line.

The Hawks have a quick turnaround, as they host the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday afternoon in Morden at 1:30pm. The Avros are 1-1 coming into this game having defeated the Capitals in their opening match, before getting blanked 3-0 by Eastman on Saturday.

Come cheer on our Hawks!

Hawks Fall 2-0 to Winnipeg Avros

The Hawks hosted the Avros on Sunday afternoon. They were joined by Jr. Hawks Emery Toupin (Notre Dame) and Lux Sawatzky (Morden). These young players were invited by Ariel Rondeau and Ella Victor respectively. Charlie Fust got the start in goal.

It was all Avros in the first period as they outshot the hosts 18-5, but thanks to the strong play of Fust, could only manage to grab a one goal lead heading to the intermission.

The second period was a much closer frame. The Hawks were only outshot 13-10 and had a few high quality chances. Gianna Yaschyshyn set up Cailyn Laing all alone in front, but her shot was denied. The Avros doubled their lead with a power play tally late in the second period.

The third period was once again fully dominated by the Avros. They outshot the Hawks 16-4 with several high quality chances. Fust allowed none to beat her and when the game was over, the Avros earned a well deserved 2-0 victory. Fust was chosen as player of the game for making a handful of spectacular stops to keep the game close. In the end, she was credited with 45 saves.

The Hawks will only have one game next weekend when they host the Winnipeg Ice on Sunday, October 11th at 4:30pm.

Hawks Lose Season Opener Against Wildcats

The Hawks welcomed the Westman Wildcats to Morden on Saturday, to kick off the 2026/27 season. They were familiar with the opposition as they played them in the CP Showcase less than a week ago. The Hawks were hoping for a better result on home ice. Madison Froese got the start in net.

The first period did not go well for the hosts. The Wildcats dominated the game and if it wasn't for the strong work of Froese, this one would have been out of reach early. After twenty minutes, the Wildcats were only up one goal, despite outshooting the Hawks 17-3.

The Hawks played a better second period, but fell further behind and went to the room down two goals.

The Wildcats tacked on two more goals in the third period to make the final score 4-0. Froese was outstanding all game, making 40 saves in the season debut. The Hawks named Gianna Yaschyshyn player of the game for her aggressive puck pursuit and relentless effort all over the ice.

The Hawks will do some team building this week as they take to the Red River to learn the art of Dragon Boating. Then they are back on the ice twice next weekend. They will visit the Winnipeg Ice on Saturday night at the Hockey for All Centre before hosting the Winnipeg Avros in Morden on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm.

Hawks Lose Final Game of Showcase

The Hawks completed the CP Showcase with a Sunday morning game against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season. Charlie Fust got the nod in goal and the Hawks were down a player as Tenley McLaren sat this one out with an injury.

The Wildcats carried the play, the chances and the scoring in the opening period. When the dust settled, the Hawks trailed 3-0 heading to the dressing room.

The second period was the best of the weekend for the Hawks as they managed some sustained zone time and several good scoring chances. The Wildcats were the only team to score however and extended the lead to four goals after forty minutes of play.

The Wildcats added two more in the third and secured a 6-0 victory while outshooting the Hawks 44-27. Lots of positives for the Hawks to draw on, but they have their work cut out for them this season in what looks like a more balanced and improved overall brand of hockey from the other teams who we saw this weekend.

Elin Olson was chosen as the player of the game for being cool under pressure, making several good breakout passes and working hard to clear players out of the front of her goal.

The Hawks kick off the regular season this coming Saturday, in Morden, at 1:30pm against the Westman Wildcats.

Hawks Drop Both Games on Saturday at CP Showcase

The Hawks faced Pilot Mound and the Ice on Saturday at the CP Showcase.

The Hawks dropped both games but there were some positive notes. Charlie Fust played well in the opener making 38 saves. Rylen Fallis was chosen as player of the game for her tenacious effort and creating several odd man rushes with her zone clearances. Willow Winslow scored the Hawks' lone goal, recording her first Hawks' goal at the U18 level.

The Hawks looked tired in the second game against the Ice and lost 5-0. We were outshot 30-17, but very few of our shots provided a challenge to the Ice netminder. Ariel Rondeau was the player of this game for a relentless effort on defence.

The Hawks have one game left against the Westman Wildcats on Sunday.

Hawks Fall To Avros in CP Showcase Opener

The Hawks played their first of four games this weekend in the Central Plains Showcase in Portage. They faced off against the Winnipeg Avros. Madison Froese got the start in net for this one and boy was she busy!

The Hawks were badly outshot and outplayed in the first. The Avros scored the only goal of the period to lead 1-0 after 20 minutes and had a 24-6 edge in shots.

The Hawks improved in the second getting outshot 15-12, but started showing some signs of life and had a few good scoring chances. Despite this, the Avros scored the only goal of the second to double their lead to 2-0 after 40 minutes.

The Hawks continued to improve in the final period, but couldn't find the net. Froese made several amazing saves in the third and kept the score 2-0. Froese was undoubtedly the player of the game on the evening making 48 saves. The Hawks will have the alarm clocks go off early tomorrow as they face the Pilot Mound team at 8am.

Hawks Lose Close One in Portage

The Hawks were in Portage Sunday evening to complete their brief pre season schedule. Charlie Fust got the start in this matchup.

The first period had some decent flow and a few scoring chances for both teams, but neither squad could find the net.

The Hawks came out to start the second with great energy and effort. They managed to open the scoring at the seven minute mark. Bree Pearce drove the puck to the net, but her attempt on goal was denied. The rebound made its way out to the blue line where Makayla Warnick was waiting. Warnick's shot made its way through the crowd in front and into the back of the net to give the Hawks the lead. The Capitals tied the game before the end of the second.

The Capitals came out hungry in the third and scored two goals from net front scrambles, to grab a 3-1 advantage. The Hawks clawed one back on the power play late in the third. Giana Yaschyshyn won the faceoff to Elin Olson at the point. Olson's effort went off a body in front and Skyla Hildebrand collected the puck at the side of the goal. She slid it behind the net to Sophia Cox who took a step out and fired home the power play goal. The Hawks pulled Fust to try and tie up the game, but were unable to grab another goal.

Hildebrand was named the player of the game for taking pucks to the net and playing hard for 60 minutes.

The Hawks will be back in Portage next weekend for the Capitals Showcase. They will face the Avros, Pilot Mound, the Ice and Westman.
