WHAT DO COLLEGE COACHES LOOK FOR IN THE PLAYERS THEY RECRUIT?
- You need the grades to become a student-athlete at the college level.
- Obviously skills, players that can skate and make plays. But it's more than just skills.
- Competitiveness- You must have competitive fire and a willingness to battle every time you step onto the ice.
- Character and leadership- Do you lead by example? Do you have a positive outlook? Do you support your teammates? Do you have the respect of your teammates? Do you work hard, every practice, every shift, every game, no matter what the score is?
- Coachable players- Do you have a growth mindset? Do you apply what you are being taught?
- Good Body Language- Coaches and scouts are looking to see how you react to adversity. They notice if you slam your stick, hang your head, or yell at your teammates. How do you react when your team is down? How do you react to instruction from your coaches?
- Game Speed- Players that can perform their skills and think the game at a high speed and process information quickly. (Vision and Hockey IQ)
- Playing without the Puck- Coaches and scouts will watch how you play without the puck. Are you creating opportunities or making things easier for your teammates when you do not have the puck?
- Poise- The ability to make good decisions with the puck under heavy pressure. The ability to internalize bad calls, bad breaks, or bounces that don't go your way.
